The latest Fringe casting news sees the return of a Detrimental Doctor. Season 4 casting spoilers follow.
William Sadler will reclaim his role as Dr. Bruce Sumner — the director of St. Claire’s mental institution where Walter was incarcerated following the fire in his lab which led to the death of the Carla Warren.
Sadler broke the news via twitter:
“LA to NY tomorrow. Then Vancouver on Wed. to shoot another “Fringe”. No rest for the wicked. [..] It’ll be fun to see “Walter” again. For me anyway.”
Sadler also shared this photo of him and John Noble on the Fringe set:

Sumner appeared in the eighth episode of season 1 The Equation where he tried to get his claws back into a recently liberated Walter, suggesting that he wasn’t fit to be out in society.
His return is not exactly unexpected following the actions of Peter resetting the timeline in the season 3 finale, but it should be interesting to see what role Sumner will play in Walter’s life.
The Sumner of all fears?
Sadler’s casting would seem to confirm that Walter retraced those steps all the way to St. Claire’s despite not having Peter as a motivation for his crimes and subsequent meltdown (although it’s possible that Peter was still a factor in some sense, depending on the exact context of ‘he doesn’t exist’.)
Noble recently suggested that Walter would be “very sad” without the presence of Peter to draw out the better parts of his humanity. In the absence of Boy Bishop, it would seem that Olivia has been tasked with nurturing Walter, as recently revealed by Noble:
“If Olivia took Walter from [St. Claire’s mental hospital] a few years ago – she wanted to use him, he fulfilled that – he would still be under some sort of condition of her approval that he’s doing a good job.”
Previous casting news has Dirty Sexy Money actress Michelle Kruseic in a recurring role.
Fringe Season 4 kicks of with “A Sort Of Homecoming”, Friday, September 23 on FOX. Catch the latest teaser:
