Who Can She Trust? Who Can’t She Trust
Five episodes in and one thing that we do know about Olivia is that she has trust issues - or she should have. You kinda get the feeling that when John Scott told her that he loved her, she hadn’t heard those words for a long time. Clearly, when it came to John, she felt the same way. But after seemingly betraying her, since his ‘death’, John Scott has done everything in his power to let her know that he isn’t the one that she should be suspicious of.
Whilst we shouldn’t rule out the possibility of encryption key-holding Massive Dynamic pulling the strings which are now directing John Scott 2.0, he might very well be telling the truth. If so, who is the ‘betrayer’ that John Scott warns her about? Let’s run down the top candidates:
1). Phillip Broyles. We know that these two got off on the wrong foot - Broyles was still bitter at Olivia for busting his friend and Olivia was a mere “Liaison” determined to get to the bottom of some strange events on-board a Boeing 627. But, according to the last ‘living’ words of John Scott, Broyles sent Olivia to the storage facility (where Scott got blown up) intentionally. His words:
“Ask yourself why you, why did Broyles send you” (paraphrasing slightly)
So, did Broyles send her to the storage facility because he hoped that she would meet the fate that met John Scott, or is there more to it? Perhaps Broyles already knew that Olivia was deeply connected to the Pattern and wanted to send her in to the deep end? Either Way, Broyles is a good candidate on the ‘not to trust’ list.
2). Nina Sharp. From what we know Nina and Olivia hadn’t met until John was in a life-threatening condition, so it’s debatable whether it was even possible for Nina to ‘betray’ Olivia. But despite her bold charm and striking smile, there’s something not quite right when it comes to Nina. She always seems to be one step ahead of Olivia’s ‘white rabbit’, and we know for a fact that Nina has already tried to head-hunt her, seemingly because she knows that Olivia has a connection to the Pattern - a connection that the FBI agent herself isn’t even aware of. So perhaps Nina is the one who ‘betrayed’ Olivia, especially if there’s a deeper connection between the pair that we are yet to learn..
3). Charlie Francis. I’m pretty convinced that there’s something going on with this guy, his shoulder is just too conveniently placed underneath Olivia’s chin at the right moments. Sure he seems genuine, but he has these long lingering looks that he gives to Olivia - and I don’t think they’re romantic stares, although I accept that might also be the case. Let’s not forget that Charlie was one of the few people who knew about Olivia and John’s relationship - did he keep quiet because he’s a friend and that’s how he rolls, or because it was convenient for him to have Olivia pre-occupied? Remember, in her own words, Olivia is a good observer - perhaps it suited Charlie to have Olivia’s head turned whilst he dabbled with the Pattern? Also, as far as betrayals go, Charlie betraying Olivia would perhaps be the biggest one we could currently have. She loves that man.
4). Olivia’s Uncle. OK, so we’re yet to see this character on-screen and we don’t even know that he’s still alive, but he was referenced in Olivia’s ‘dream state’ with John (pilot episode). He’s the only mention of Olivia’s family that we’ve had so far, and if there is some juicy Olivia back-story to be had, perhaps it might come in the form of her uncle betraying her?
5). Peter Bishop. This one is extremely unlikely, but wouldn’t it be something if Peter had been playing Olivia all along, if he knew everything about her whilst pretending to know nothing. Yeah, it’s a stretch, but what do we reallyknow about the boy Bishop, and why are we yet to see him on-screen with Sharpey?
That said, I think we should keep an eye on Charlie.
