IGN‘s Ramsey Isler has written a nice article on Fringe’s “Mad Scientist”, Walter Bishop, with particular focus on his episodic ‘Lab Notes’ which serve as an extension of the show itself. Here’s an excerpt:

Fringe is often lauded as the second coming of The X-Files, and its addicting, mystery-filled story is considered to be on par with shows like Lost. There are plenty of plot threads surrounding the extraordinary string of strange events called “the Pattern”. But whichever way you look, it always comes back to Fringe‘s modern day version of Dr. Frankenstein: Walter Bishop. He’s the center of a number of technologies and plot lines in the story, and he’s also the source of many of the show’s most perplexing mysteries.
Luckily, the show producers have given us some useful detective tools outside of the show itself. Walter’s Lab Notes, released on FOX.com with each episode, are key to understanding some events that weren’t quite explained in the show, and they provide a fascinating view into the mind of our favorite madman. We’ve compiled a list of things that appear to be hinted at in the notes, but as with all things Fringe, the jury’s still out on whether any of this is anywhere close to what’s really going on.

1.14 Ability - Walter's Lab Notes
The good doctor returns with more of his musings from the events of 1.14 “Ability”. Click above image to enlarge.
He refers to the ZFT ‘Bible’ – Zerstorung durch Fortschritte der Technologie as a “book of revelations”, and goes on to quote a passage from Revelation 18:2:

BabYlon the great is fallen, is  fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every fouls spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird”

I’ve been hoping for more religious and spiritual themes in Fringe – they touched on it in “The Equation”, as Walter clutched onto his Bible – a man of science, I wanted to see what impression the passages would have on him. At the time they seemed to instill some humanity in Walter, as he issued a stark, yet friendly, warning to Olivia about the perils of delving through memories. Now I’m intrigued to see what the impact the ZFT ‘Bible’ has on him – particularly with that awesome cliff-hanger. But more on that later..I’ve got 7 Fringe-less weeks to fill!

1.13 The Transformation - Walter's Lab Notes

Walter Bishop documents his latest thoughts in the aftermath of another crazy day on the fringe (click above to enlarge).

Unfortunately he doesn’t offer much explanation for how Marshall Bowman transformed into a hedgehog, but he does provide an apt comparison between a blocked reservoir and Olivia’s memories of John Scott:

The fluid in the reservoir remains at a constant level., even when small quantities of fluid are added, as the excess flow out the siphon pipe. But! Forcing a larger volume of fluid into the reservoir completely fills the pipe, at which point gravitational pull on the fluid in the pipe creates a suction that nearly empties the reservoir of all it’s contents

Any solids within the reservoir must be smaller than the diameter of the siphon pipe, or at least soft enough to squeeze through. Otherwise the solid matter may become stuck in the pipe. Then the excess fluid accumulates in the reservoir, overflowing once it’s surface reaches the rim.

Likewise, Scott’s consciousness has become lodged in the plumbing of Dunham’s brain, interrupting the free-flow of neural impulses.

Ghost in the Machine

After reading Walter’s 1.12 Lab Notes, I’m wondering whether the ‘computer virus’ can also offer a metaphorical explanation for Walter’s mirror image (or “Alter Walter” as he’s come to be known), who we saw during his venture back inside the walls of St. Claire’s in “The Equation”? Walter refers to his mirror twin as a “Ghost in the Machine”, coined from the 1967 work by Arthur Koestler. This description leads me to believe that the “Alter-Walter” is a manifestation of an earlier version of Walter Bishop; a sinister part of himself who he somehow managed to banish to the confines of his memory – a memory which is, thankfully, fragmented. Once again, this hints at the duality of Walter and makes me wonder; just what was he like in his earlier days, and does he deserve the forgiveness of Jessica Warren for the death of Carla Warren? What if it wasn’t an ‘accident’?

1.12 The No Brainer - Walter's Lab NotesWalter Bishop has provided us with his musings of the latest events in the Fringeverse (click on the image above to enlarge).

Dr. Bishop makes a metaphorical allusion between the rigours of daily routine and the brain liquefaction process of “The No Brainer”.

He wonders what victims of the ‘computer virus’ saw before they died. It makes sense that he should be so interested, after all, this is the man who devised a way to capture the last living image from that poor girl in “The Same Old Story”.

1.11 “Bound” – Walter’s Lab Notes

1.11 BOUND Lab Notes

[Click the image to enlarge]

Walter compares the heart clenching parasite from “..Mr. Jones” to the stomach tearing slug:

“How difficult it proves to separate myth from fact, and fact from myth. Gigantism abound!”

He goes on to make giant comparisons. It’s strange how myth can put many a thing into sharp perspective; giants within giants – the gigantic slug is in actual fact a human cell, documented in the episode but crystallized in these lab notes. This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Super Size Me”.  A virus which gigantifies (yes, I made that up) the human cell it attacks. Self perpetuating, self serving, or does it have a master?

Results: 1.09 Fringie of the Week

by Roco on December 6, 2008 · 0 comments

Better late than never!

Congratulations to Walter Bishop, your Fringie of the week for episode 1.09 “The Dreamscape”. Walter pipped Olivia to victory, receiving 29% of the total vote.

Walter now overtakes his son, Peter. The mammary-remembering doctor now has 5 wins, Peter has 4, and Olivia/The Observer and Meegar’s mom (!?) all have 1 win each. It’s going to be one heck of a tussle once Fringe returns in January. And don’t forget, we still have the 1.10 “Safe” Fringie of the Week coming up, erm, soon.
