In this article I take a look back at last night’s season 2 premiere of Fringe with 6 things I learned from A New Day In The Old Town. These are my immediate thoughts upon watching the episode:

5 Things I Learned from ANDITOT

1. Peter is rocking the “black and gray” clothing

First revealed  in “Bad Dreams” as the attire of soldiers in the coming war, the season premiere told me that our Peter is getting his swag on and unknowingly preparing for battle. Proactive Peter – I like it.

2. The hunt is on!

As I speculated in our recent “Fringe Observations” article, Olivia’s “near miss” in the finale was not such a near miss – she travelled to the parallel world prior to the elevator ride. The shapeshifter was lying in wait, an attempt to intercept her meeting with Bell. However Olivia transported to the parallel reality before impact. The shapeshifters are in search of a hidden item, something so important that it would bring one of them to the verge of tears!

This item could turn out to be a “Holy Grail” of sorts, something with religious, possibly multiversal, consequence.

MASSIVEDYNAMIC.COM SITE – OPEN!!

by Roco on September 9, 2008 · 6 comments

The Massive Dynamic website has fully launched! Whilst this might not mean much to some of you just yet..to those of you who have been following the Fringe ARG/Viral, this fairly big news! Show/ARG premise spoilers may follow:

Just a quick recap – Massive Dynamic (MD) is the company owned by William Bell – former colleague of Walter Bishop. MD is a cutting edge company at the forefront of scientific and technological advancement. It is believed that the company produce or own many of the things that we will see in “Fringe”, from the mundane, to the extraordinary. The first issue of the comic book, “Like Minds”/”The Prisoner“, hinted that William Bell amassed his wealth through the synaptic transfer of Walter Bishop’s genius, however this is pure speculation on my part, and I suggest reading the comics if you fancy digging deeper into the fringeverse.

Massive Dymanic have often been compared to Microsoft by media reporters hungry to glean some real-world comparison between the show and today’s corporate giants. Please don’t sue us Microsoft, but your web is pretty large.

So what does the opening of the Massive Dynamic website mean? Well, it appears to confirm what many fans have been speculating – that the Fringe ARG will continue into the show itself, unlike the “LOST” ARG’s, for example, which only run during hiatus periods. Speaking of LOST, many fans have already likened MD to the Dharma Initiative, another forward thinking, seeming;y alturistic, corportation who want to better the world through science (but it’s never that simple, is it). That’s the thing, we don’t really know MD’s aims, but we do know what their website tells us, and if it’s to be believed, they are particularly interested in the following scientific and technological fields: aerospace & transportation, biological and medical, computing and communications, energy and environment and life & leisure. The words “HOPE”, PROGRESS”, “GROWTH” and “HAPPINESS” can also be seen floating around on the front page of the website.

So we have an idea of their vested interests, but are these their real goals, or is this a PR stunt? Eitherway, what genuinely made me gasp as I looked through the site, were some of the descriptions for their achievements or goals. For instance, this is taken from their aerospace & transportation page:

Time spent in transit is time wasted. Time you could have spent with family, friends, and co-workers. Because Massive Dynamic values your time, our mandate is to get you where you’re going — safer and faster than ever before. The acclaimed PEARL aerocontrol system, developed by MD’s Fleming-Monroe division, promises to reduce flight delays by as much as 30% in the next few years. Meanwhile, our zero-friction light rails and flex-hull container ships promise to revolutionize commercial transport.

What’s next? Travel time follows a power law, decreasing by a given factor year by year. MD’s Zeno-Transit Initiative aims to take that process to the limit, making near-instantaneous travel a reality in your lifetime.

So we’re talking about time-travel or teleportation, right? That’s what they’re working on making a reality ‘in our lifetime’. Whilst I am well aware that the premise involves “Fringe Science”, reading through the MD website makes it somewhat more real. It’s really happening, we’re finally going to get a show that deals with exciting aspects of our world that are improbable, yet very possible. Other than LOST, there is no other show that excites me to these levels, and the show hasn’t even started yet. *OK, breathe* I know we shouldn’t place too much expectation on the shoulders of JJ and his team, but already I’m liking the effort and meticulous research that the creative team, FOX and the runners of this ARG have put into this show. Well done guys, the lines are blurring, now the challenge is to keep it up!

As an aside, that jingle that you hear as you touch down on the MD website – yup, it’s made up of Fibonacci code, as first spotted by maestrojon. The Pattern, it’s THE PATTERN!

We’ll have a lot more on MD over the coming days, weeks and probably months, so why not head on over to the site and have a look around. Don’t forget to stop back here in the comments, and share any thoughts, observations or theories that you might have. Or, if forums are more your thing, we have a partner forum, fringe-forum.com, where fans are already discussing MD and everything FRINGE!

Countdown to Fringe: Teleportation

by Roco on September 9, 2008 · 1 comment

We continue our brief look at the type of Fringe sciences that we might see in Fringe:

What is Teleportation?: Teleportation involves dematerializing an object at one point, and sending the details of that object’s precise atomic configuration to another location, where it will be reconstructed. What this means is that time and space could be eliminated from travel — we could be transported to any location instantly, without actually crossing a physical distance. – HowStuffWorks.com

Fringe, Fact or Fiction?: In 1993, the idea of teleportation moved out of the realm of science fiction and into the world of theoretical possibility. It was then that physicist Charles Bennett and a team of researchers at IBM confirmed that quantum teleportation was possible, but only if the original object being teleported was destroyed. This revelation, first announced by Bennett at an annual meeting of the American Physical Society in March 1993, was followed by a report on his findings in the March 29, 1993 issue of Physical Review Letters. Since that time, experiments using photons have proven that quantum teleportation is in fact possible. – HowStuffWorks.com

Teleportation in popular culture:Beam me up Scotty!“. Startrek first popularized the idea of teleportation in the 1960′s (On a side note, Fringe creator, JJ. Abrams, is directing a new Startrek movie to be launced in 2009). Since then there have been a bunch of teleportation references in movies, comics and genre in general, including the recent blockbuster, “Jumper“.

3 New Badass FRINGE Promo Posters!!

by Roco on August 14, 2008 · 5 comments

*GUSH* Seriously, we’ve been gushing over these ever since we set eyes on them – 3 new Fringe promo posters featuring Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and John Noble.  FOX have done a tremendous job with these latest editions. Whilst the other promo posters have focused more on the (also awesome) mysterious ‘nature’ images, these new posters (below), give Fringe a ‘face’ and a vibrancy, whilst keeping that air of mystery (check out Torv’s hair in the 2nd image, notice anything!?).
Anyways, feel free to click on the images below (to enlarge) and gush away!:

Newsrama take an exclusive look into the Fringe comic book prequel (click to enlarge):

Fringe Comic Prequel Fringe Comic Prequel

“There are definitely hidden (and not-so-hidden) elements that will feed into the Fringe[tv] series that you can only find in the comic,” said Athena Wickham, co-story consultant for the Fringecomic and TV executive for Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot. While Wickham said reading the comic isn’t necessary for viewers to understand what’s happening in the show, “it will give them a greater appreciation of what’s to come and help them uncover some of the integrated plot points.”

“The writers have created such a rich and complex series that we are looking to the comic to further illuminate the Fringe universe,” said David Baronoff, creative executive for Bad Robot, who is also a co-story consultant on the Fringe comic.

As the comic series opens, Wickham said the first issue “begins when the yin and yang of fringe science first meet face to face.”

“The issues will consist of two parts. Part A will tell the back-story story of two of our key characters: Walter Bishop and William Bell. Part B will consist of stand-alone stories,” Wickham said. “Readers will be introduced to a range of characters — from those at the epicenter of the pilot to others who might not live to make a series appearance.”

Comics artist Tom Mandrake will provide art for the back-story. “He will be joined by Simon Coleby in the first issue, with surprise artists to come in upcoming issues,” Baronoff said. “Mandrake just jumped out at us with his extremely emotional and creepy art. He’s producing amazing work. Coleby is a rising star whose style is perfect for Fringe.”

Baronoff said the comic is being designed to visually echo the Fringe universe and the overall tone of the television series.

“We are working with the amazing team at Wildstorm so that both the artists’ work and the physical book itself will be reflective of the story’s place and time,” Baronoff said. “Much like the series, we hope this comic will run the gamut from dark and eerie to funny and profound.”

“It’s a lot of fun and we hope it creeps out all of our readers,” Wickham said.

The Fringe comic book, penned by JJ. Abrams, is being published by DC/Wildstorm and is available from August 27 and each month thereafter for 6 months.

Spoilers: Episode Three Details

by Roco on July 27, 2008 · 1 comment

Spoiler details for the third episode of Fringe have emerged – specifically the episode title, plot details and images:

SPOILER WARNING!! (Proceed at own risk!):

The scene they were filming was for Episode 103, titled The Ghost Network.

It was mostly dialogue between Kirk Acevedo’s character Charlie Francis and Anna Torv’s character Olivia Dunham that took place right after a funeral (more on that later). It looked like her character is upset with him and he is chasing after her, they argue and then Lance Reddick’s character Phillip Broyles walks up and breaks things up. You may recognize Lance from The Wire (there were a few people watching from the sidewalk who were big fans of The Wire and excited to see him) and Kirk Acevedo may be familiar from Oz and The Black Donnellys. We also sensed there may be some sexual tension between Charlie Francis and Olivia Dunham.

Now onto the big spoiler! In the background of this scene there was a casket set up and a large “tribute” photo of the dead character next to it. We were able to zoom in on the picture and see who it was. It was Mark Valley’s character John Scott! You can see a close up of the photo below. Assuming he is really dead, he didn’t last long, huh? – OnLocationVacations.com
