blue lights

If you’ve followed FringeBloggers for any period of time (in either universe) you’ll know that we often look beyond the fabric of the show to extract the hidden mechanics that permeate the entire Fringe universe. Why? Because art is interesting and so is the way in which we communicate with it.

Last week we got our first official peek through the window of season 3. We learned a few things and wondered about others. But what else can we take away from 30 seconds of video? What energy were the promo editors picking up on when they decided to show us Fringe above the clouds?

No real spoilers other than the promo. click to continue…

Here’s the finale minutes of last night’s Fringe finale for those of you who missed them. There are several interesting things in this final scene that caught my eye, most of them I’ll expand on in another post, but keep an eye out for the blue lights when Olivia is in the elevator -- I think this proves once and for all that they are not simple styling, but rather, they are indicators of travel, as I speculated several months ago.

Further to that, it seems that Olivia didn’t just travel from one reality to another..she skipped through several before arriving in the ‘belly of the beast’, so to speak. (the people appearing and disappearing in the lift, along with clever camera work and sound FX, tell us that she entered several realities).

To be honest, this is satisfying not just because I (and others) predicted the significance of these lights, but the process of identifying them and formulating early ideas was a blast. More than that though, it also tells us that Bad Robot don’t just throw in a bunch of superficial elements for  styling sake. As a fan of the show who likes to look for the ‘signposts’ to the bigger mysteries, this give me great confidence in their ability going into next season.

To be honest, I thought they gave the game away too easily in “Ability” -- they retouched the intro featuring David Jones’ teleportation to Little Hill and added copious amounts of blue lighting to the original scene from “Safe”. Prior to that they were more subtle and ambiguous. Nonetheless, it was fun trying to second guess the creators. The other possibility that I had in mind, was that the lights indicated observation from another reality. This could also come into play next season.

Here’s our Clues and Eastereggs round-up for episode 1.16 “Unleashed”.

Who Blue They Would Die?

1.16 Unleashed - Clues & Eastereggs

After an episode absence, the blue lights reappeared in magnificent glory. The mysterious flashes can fleetingly be seen after the monster flips the activists car off the road. I guess this was a semi-Pattern-event, since it delved into Walter’s past. But don’t forget the blue lights have also appeared during other stand-alone episodes, such as “The No Brainer”, where they were VERY prevalent. What does this mean, you ask? It means that we are yet to understand the full nature of these strange occurrences — although I have a few ideas. ;)

The complete list of this seasons blue flashes are listed here.
