JJ. Abrams is the master of hidden mystery, and so it’s only right that the pilot episode of Fringe contained some hidden audio that no-one had noticed..until now! TheMarkedMouse over at Fringe-Forum.com has discovered a piece of hidden audio from Richard Steig’s tape recorder. The audio can be found at the start of the tape, in the scene where Olivia finds the buried tape and rewinds it to the start. When this part of the audio is reversed and slowed down, the following ‘conversation’ can be heard:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

TheMarkedMouse has also provided a transcript of the audio (Updated):

“Boy! [or Play!] The patient has no tracheal deviation.”
[indecipherable] “on chest and abdomen!”
“Let’s get a C-Spine, Chest, and Head CT”
“Pupil?”
“Um… round?”

So what does this all mean? Sounds to me like an experimentation of some kind. But why did Richard Steig have this on his recorder, and what was his involvement?
It’s worth bearing in mind that hidden content like this can add to the enjoyment of the show for hard-core fans, but probably wont be essentialknowledge if you’re a casual viewer. That’s the beauty of Abrams shows. He always gives something extra for his loyal fans to dig through. If you want a “LOST” comparison for this kind of hidden content, check out the episode “Man of Science, Man of Faith” (among numerous others), in which a seemingly ‘astral projecting’ Walt appears before Shannonsaying something unintelligible, but when his voice is reversed he can be heard saying “Don’t push the button, button bad”.

Let us know if you have any ideas on this first piece of hidden Fringe audio.

Press Kit - Letter from JJ. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex KurtzmanAaron Barnhart over at TV Barn received a mysterious package, otherwise known as a press kit from Fox to promote that hottest of fall shows, “Fringe”. Aaron has been kind enough to share the contents of the press kit: Inside he found a letter from creators JJ. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, which sarcastically opens with:

“We’re so thrilled that you liked the pilot of FRINGE, which you more than likely downloaded illegally.”

After all, it’s not like Fox had anything to do with the leak..is it. The press kit also contained an audio recording from Fringe character, Phillip Broyles (played by Lance Reddick), which you can listen to below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As you can hear, Broyles refers to a series of mysterious events all linked to the manipulation of nature – the kid who is returned 10 years after going missing, hasn’t aged a day, the Tsunami seemingly triggered by high pitched frequency, a comatose patient who wakes up to reveal psychic abilities that give him access to real-time top-secret data. These events will all be familiar to those of you who have seen the early scans for the Fringe comic book:

Comic Book spoilers below:

The lines are already blurred – not just between reality and fiction, but between fiction and fiction! What I really like about Broyles’ memo, is his questioning of whether these seemingly separate events are linked through a conscious hand or whether they have occurred through random happenings – design vs coincidence, science vs nature.

Broyles’ mention of the “rapid cell division” case in Argentina and a possible link with Dr. (Walter) Bishop’s most recent case is potentially interesting, as it shows a possible link (“pattern“?) between these seemingly random events. It’s also interesting to hear Broyles say that he’ll be resurrectingWalter’s Bishop’s old projects – can you imagine the crazy-fun places that will take us!?

All in all some pretty interesting stuff. It leaves this Fringe Blogger asking the very question that originally hooked me into the show – is this evidence of someone using science to play God, or is this natures backlash?

*The Fringe comic book is produced by DC and Wildstorm, issue #1 (of 6) goes on sale from August 27. Fringe premieres on FOX 09.09.08

Thanks: TV Barn for the press kit details, images and audio – Fringe-Forum.com for comic scan – Fringe Television for comic scans.

Fringe Butterfly

The Official FOX site imaginetheimpossibilities.com has been updated with a new image – that of a Butterfly with a visible (and freaky) Exoskeleton. Below the butterfly is an equation s(b)=ba and above the butterfly are two overlapping circular images. When the butterfly is clicked, a radio spot is played, and a new radio spot, about a ‘51 year old female patient growing over eight 1/2 inches overnight’, is also revealed. We’ve captured it below for your listening convenience:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I’m not sure what the equation relates to but one would assume it ties in with the Golden Ratio as well as the associated audio above? As for the circular images, that’s also a mystery. We’ll do some digging to see what we can come up with. Do let us know if you find anything.
