The 2-hour Fringe premiere episode will be streamed free to US college students. Fox have identified that a large proportion of their visitors are coming from .edu addresses and have decided to take advantage of this heavy demographic web-traffic:

The network decided to go ahead with the idea after examining Fox.com visitor stats, which showed that a high proportion of students were logging on each day.

“We talked about what we could do with colleges given the fact that we have so much traffic coming from them,” said Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Liguori. “The light bulb went off – by simul-streaming Fringe and Sarah Connor, [the college students] get to see the show, and we get the increased fanbase and buzz.”

Network chiefs hope that the measure will curb the trend of illegal downloads among college students who would otherwise be unable to see the programmes.

Liguori refused to confirm whether online simulcasts could become a regular feature on the Fox site. He said: “We’ll see how this experiment goes.”

The Ne York Times have an article on JJ. Abrams, his creative stable and “Fringe”.

They compare Fringe to JJ’s other shows and note that unlike “LOST” and “Alias”, Fringe will be structured so that fans won’t get too lost if they miss an episode or two. JJ Abrams himself reveals why he’s decided to take Fringe in this direction:

“I just got tired of hearing people say to me, over and over, ‘Yeah, I was watching it, but I missed one, I got really confused, and I stopped watching it,’”

Abrams talks about the degree of accuracy in mapping out a series like Fringe:

“The evolution from your ideas and expectations and intent to what actually occurs in the series is a massive gulf,” Mr. Abrams said. “It’s a best-effort scenario. But I think that’s what a series is anyway.”

Fringe co-writer, Roberto Orci, adds:

“If we’re canceled at Episode 13,” Mr. Orci said, “we’ll tell you at Episode 13, and if we go on, you could literally find this out in seven years.”

JJ. Abrams goes on to reveal that that even the Warner Brothers and Fox bosses don’t know all of the details of the over-arching Fringe narrative:

“There are certain details that are hugely important,” he said with some mirth, “that I believe, if shared, will destroy any chance of actually getting on the air. These are the kinds of things that scare people away.”

Abrams concludes by dispelling fears that he will ditch the Fringe cause for other projects, insisting that for now, he’s fully immersed with overseeing the creative development of the show:

“We’ve been thinking about this story for a year, and our staff has been thinking about it just for a couple of months,” he said. “Right now it’s all hands on deck, to micromanage every decision.”

Mark Valley is FBI agent John Scott, who works alongside the belle of the ball, Olivia Dunham.

Most famous for?: Mark Valley is best known for his role as Brad Chase in Boston Legal:

Brad was transferred from Crane, Poole & Schmidt’s D.C. office in the pilot episode to assist in curbing Denny Crane’s erratic conduct. A former Marine, he is extremely patriotic and has expressed conservative-leaning views; he frequently voices his support for the U.S. military. In the third season episode “The Nutcrackers”, Jeffrey Coho, in an attempt at reconciliation, mentions “Peace on Earth,” a line from Hark the Herald Angels Sing, to which Brad responds, “I knew it. Liberal”; indicating an opposing view of politics. Brad frequently clashes with Alan Shore, who once commented that Brad views global warming as “fuzzy math.”

Bio: Born in Ogdensburg, New York, Valley is a 1987 graduate of the United States Military Academy and served in Operation Desert Storm.

Hype: We’ll be honest, none of us watch Boston Legal, and if we do, we’re not admitting to it! Anyways, that doesn’t stop us from looking forward to seeing what Mark can do in FRINGE.

If he were on LOST, who would he be?: We’ll be totally original and say that he’d be Ed Mars, the U.S. Marshal, on the singular fact that they share similar-ish professions.

Smexyness: Mark’s a strapping beast of a man, but not this bloggers type. Still, I can appreciate what Mark has to offer others: 7/10.

Countdown to FRINGE: Mind Control

by Roco on August 22, 2008 · 0 comments

What is Mind Control?: “Refers to a broad range of psychological tactics able to subvert an individual’s control of his own thinking, behavior, emotions, or decisions” – Wikipedia

Fringe, Fact or Fiction?: According to a recent Popular Mechanics article, Mind Control may be somewhere in between Fringe and Fact:

The Force, it appears, may be with us sooner than expected. A study in the journal Naturethis spring all but confirmed the latest evolution in the hard-charging, heady field of cybernetics: Monkeys can control machines with their brains. In the experiment, conducted by neuroscientists at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, a pair of macaque monkeys with electrodes implanted in their brains were able to quickly learn how to operate a robot arm as though it were their own, successfully fee ding themselves more than half the time. Aside from building a fleet of potentially potbellied test subjects, however, could this apparent breakthrough bring mind control to human prosthetics anytime soon? Or could it mean even more?

On the research track of brain-computer interfaces—direct neural connections that allow brain signals to operate a device—the robo-joystick monkeys look awfully familiar. That’s because Pitt released similar results in 2005, with a different kind of robotic arm used to grasp and retrieve food. And as far back as 2000, electrode-implanted monkeys at Duke University moved a robot arm—again, to reach for food—with their minds. Scientists at Duke ran similar experiments in 2003 and, this past January, showed off a rig that let an owl monkey on a treadmill control the walking movements of a 200-pound humanoid robot in Japan.

As interesting (if repetitive) as each of these incremental achievements are, the endgame for mind-machine interfaces is nothing short of astonishing. In the years to come, this technology could lead to prosthetics that react perfectly to a user’s thoughts, or devices that move in ways we never imagined, responding to mental commands faster than our own bodies can. The future of hyperspeed brain control outside of the lab may come littered with more pratfall than promise—even the field’s leading neuroscientist offered plenty of caveats and insisted, like his peers, that one or two major breakthroughs in other fields are still needed to open up the devices to everyone. But if the recent run of mind-bending success in this field is any indication, the big breaks can come faster than expected.

Mind Control in Popular Culture: A Clockwork Orange, The Matrix and X-Men’s Professor Xavier are just a few examples of Mind Control being portrayed in popular culture. Perhaps the most fun portrayal come from the “Jedi Mind Trick” seen in Star Wars:

In the fictional universe of Star Wars, a Jedi mind trick is a Force power. Jedi who know the power can, by using the Force, influence the actions of other “weak-minded” sentient beings.

Jedi typically perform this ability with a wave of the hand and a verbal suggestion. If the trick is successful, the victim will reply by restating the suggestion and will immediately think or do whatever the Jedi suggested. The hand wave may not be required to use the power, but in the films Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn both perform the wave when using the trick, as does Luke Skywalker.

There’s a reason for the exclamation mark in the title – It’s LANCE REDDICK, and theTVAddict.com have an exclusive interview with him! Lance plays the mysterious Special Agent Phillip Broyles in Fringe. See what he had to say about “Fringe” and his other show, “LOST”, below:

Let me start of by saying that you play two of television’s most mysterious characters. From LOST to FRINGE I have absolutely no idea what you are up to! Do you?
Lance Reddick: In LOST I can definitely say I have no idea!

Thanks to the critical acclaim of THE WIRE and your guest spot on LOST did you even have to audition for your role on FRINGE?
That was the funny thing about FRINGE. I didn’t have to audition for LOST, but with FRINGE I actually auditioned for a different role.

Which role?
Actually when I first read the script the role I thought I was most right for was Broyles. But when I went to audition they had me read for Charlie. So I didn’t hear anything and a month later I got a call to come back and audition for Broyles. A week later I was in Toronto [shooting the pilot]

Do you think it’s going to be a challenge arranging your schedule so that you can make it back to Hawaii in time for your guest spots on LOST?
As with all things on LOST, I don’t know. I only know that I am going back. But I don’t know when or for how many episodes.

As is the case with most of J.J. Abrams shows, the motivations of your FRINGE character Agent Phillip Broyles aren’t exactly clear. Do you know where your character is heading this season?
No.

Is Broyles good or bad and how much do your character’s motivations affect how you tackle the role?
It’s a little harder for me on LOST. But as far as FRINGE goes, I’m not saying that the creators have told me I’m good. But I’m fairly confident that I’m a good guy.

Of course one of the things I love about all of JJ’s shows is that the line between good and evil is pretty murky.
Exactly. Let me put it this way, there is always more than one dimension.

Do you ever worry that you’re going to accidently spill a massive secret to a member of the press [TV Addict note: Fingers crossed!]. Or have you gotten pretty good, as the British say, at keeping ‘mum’?
Especially on this show, because I know a little more than I do with LOST, I tend to generally be on pins and needles that I’m going to say the wrong thing.

You can read the entire interview over at the TV Addict.

There is no doubt that Lance is one of the main reasons to watch Fringe, the guy is a tantalizing, hypnotic actor, as fans of LOST and The Wire will agree.

Many thanks to Daniel from theTVAddict.com for this interview!

The New York Television Festival have announced their premiere week line-up for 2008, which includes a chance to attend a special screening of JJ. Abrams Fringe, followed by a brief discussion with the cast and crew. More below:

Saturday, September 13, 8 PM: FOX’s “Fringe”

On Saturday, September 13, the NYTVF and FOX will present a special screening event featuring “Fringe,” the anticipated new hour-long thriller from J.J. Abrams (“Lost”), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the team behind “Star Trek,” Mission: Impossible III and “Alias.”  The event begins with red-carpet arrivals of the stars and producers of the new series followed by a screening.  After the screening, “Fringe” cast and producers will engage in a brief discussion about the show’s creation and production in New York City.

Fringe,” currently shooting on location in New York City, is a fantastical thriller about an unlikely trio who uncovers a deadly mystery involving a series of unbelievable events that may be a part of a larger, more disturbing pattern that blurs the line between the possible and the impossible.  The series, debuting with a special extended series premiere Tuesday, September 9 (8:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX, stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Mark Valley, Blair Brown and Jasika Nicole; and is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions.

Thanks to NY Television Festival for the heads-up.

Fibonacci Clues in New Fox Fringe Site

by Roco on August 21, 2008 · 3 comments

Just a quick update on the Fox Fringe site that has been updated with a stylish new theme. Erik in the comments has made a the observation that some of the lettering for certain sections of the site comprise not just random numbers, but the Fibonacci numbers (1,3,5,8…)! Why is this important or even relevant? Well, hopefully, our earlier post on Fibonacci and the Fringe “pattern” might shed some light.

The appearance of these numbers on the official site, perhaps goes someway to answering our earlier question as to whether “The Pattern” linked directly into the real-life Fibonacci series, or whether it merely borrowed from it. So far, it looks like the former. Fibonacci (or mother earth?) would be proud, i’m sure.

It’s good to see that FOX are on the ball when it comes to Fringe.

Check out the newly revamped Fox Fringe site here or via our sidebar links. Let us know if you notice any other….patterns.
