The Office

heavy competition

This time last year Fringe was a mere baby – small, slimy and shivering as it popped out of Bad Robot’s healthy womb. We each took it to our hearts, nurtured it – some even offered to breast feed it. Now it’s clambering, nay, walking on its own two legs with everyone going “goo-goo-ga-ga” over its potential. Now the question at the back of many of our minds is whether or not this growing child can withstand the onslaught that awaits – a Thursday night switch where it will come pram to pram with The Office, CSI and some hospital show. According to reports, Fox, in a very David Jonesque way, are showing ‘faith’ in the youngster’s abilities:

If Fox is serious about Fringe (and aren’t we all), why is it forcing it to compete against CSI, Grey’s Anatomy and The Office on Thursdays? — Anita
MICKEY: At first blush, moving Fringe to such a powerhouse night would appear to be a suicide mission. But Fox entertainment prez Kevin Reilly lays out his strategy thusly: “[CSI and Grey's] are two still-terrific appointment shows, but they’re down. They are not consuming all the oxygen at 9 o’clock” he insists. ”[Fringe] got a huge amount of buzz coming out of the last batch of episodes … and is a real alternative to both of those shows. It’s not an overlapping audience.” Oh yeah, Kev? Tell that to my DVR, which is already groaning at the prospect of Thursday nights this fall.

Listen, if Dollhouse can survive with 2 million viewers, I see no reason to fear for Fringe getting the axe any time soon. My main concern is the quality of the show and whether TPTB can maintain their creative flair in what will be a crucial season in the show’s development – more viewers means that the show is doing something right, that it’s reaching people who might not be as committed as the core fans are. I’d love to see Fringe retain and possibly build on the 12 million (or there abouts) average from last season, just as “Lost” pretty much did before it. (take note of when and why the main drop in Lost’s ratings came, Fox). I heart The Office, but I think Fringe – all things being right – is a classic in the making and can handle itself in the playground.

Fringe Season 2 Predictions

you rang?

Our good friends over at the terrifyingly awesome FEARnet invited FB and a bunch of other “Fringe” commentators to take part in their “Fringe Season 2 Predictions” article. Here’s an excerpt, the link to the entire article is below:

We didn’t realize how much we enjoyed watching Fringe until the season ended. It’s true what they say, that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. The good news is that Fringe has officially been renewed by FOX for Season 2, the bad news is we need to wait until the fall to see a new episode. Much like we did with Dollhouse last week, we decided to ask our favorite Fringe bloggers where they think the series is headed for Season 2. We may not have the option of watching it but we do have the next best thing – we can talk about it.

Alyse Wax – FEARnet
I feel pretty confident that Fringe will not go down the same path as Lost – as in, it won’t become a tangled mess. Olivia’s ‘powers’ will come into play more, though not until closer to the end of the season.  She will learn the truth about whatever drugs were used on her as a child, and Walter will help her harness whatever powers she might have.

..That seems to be the question after exec producer Jeff Pinkner responded to claims that Kirk Acevedo had been fired from the show (possible season 2 hints):

“like all things on Fringe, there is more to this story than meets the eye.”

“We have already seen two of him on the show. We have already met the second Charlie. He had a scar on his face.”

This claim has been met with derision by some quarters who say that Pinkner is merely covering for the ‘short-sightedness’ of Acevedo’s firing. Personally, I’m a bit surprised at the level of cynicism aimed at ‘The Powers That Be’. Sure, they may be putting a diplomatic slant on things but they’re having to respond to Kirk Acevedo‘s very public, but understandable, reaction. ["Lost" fans may remember a similar incident involving Rebecca Madder during season 5].

I’m very disappointed that Kirk Acevedo [probably] wont be with the show next season – it’s never nice to see anyone lose their job (regardless of the industry in which they work), and he’s a good actor who actually seems to be a fan of Fringe and the genre in general. I’d rather have people like him, who actually want to be on the show, than someone who fancies doing a few episodes if they have time. What’s more, I thought that “Unleashed” (though not my favourite of episodes) was the beginning of our exploration in to his character – was that all for nothin’?. If Acevedo is gone from Fringe then he will be missed, and I’m not gonna blame him for breaking the news on FB [that's Facebook, not FringeBloggers ;) ].

Fox Moves Fringe To Thursday

by Roco on May 18, 2009 · 11 comments

News just in – Fox are sending Fringe to a Thursday slot for season 2. The show will air at 9pm with Bones as its lead-in. TV Week has more:

Fox is boldly sending J.J. Abrams’ “Fringe” to Thursday nights and shifting “So You Think You Can Dance” into the fall as part of an aggressive fall schedule designed to make the network more competitive in the fourth quarter.

“Fringe” will shift from a protected timeslot behind “American Idol” to Thursdays at 9, the network announced Monday. That will pit the spooky drama against CBS’ “CSI” and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” barring any decision by CBS or ABC to shake up their own schedules.

Fringe Finds Its Remote

by Roco on May 16, 2009 · 2 comments

Fox will not be continuing with the Remote-Free TV experiment next season. This means that episodes of Fringe will contain more advertisements than previously. I guess that means more trips to the kitchen for that beer (or wine, tea, coffee) during those commercials:

Viewers of the sci-fi series “Fringe” will soon have to watch something even scarier than brains leaking out of people’s ears: more commercials.

Fox Broadcasting decided this week to discontinue its year-old strategy of regularly airing fewer advertisements, at higher prices, during some TV shows, Fox executives say.

“Fringe,” one of the series in which the approach was tested, will for the most part air a normal complement of ads beginning next season. Fox is a unit of News Corp., which also owns The Wall Street Journal.

The decision comes as Fox and its broadcast-TV rivals gird for broader battles with advertisers over rates in the “upfront” ad-sales marketplace, where broadcast networks traditionally sell about three-quarters of their ad inventory for the coming TV season.

In recent weeks, analysts have predicted that the upfront marketplace could shrink 15%, as slack consumer spending encourages advertisers keep a tight hold on their purse-strings.

Fox’s experiment with airing full seasons of shows with fewer ads, dubbed “Remote-Free TV,” was one of the industry’s more ambitious attempts to combat ad clutter and keep viewers from zapping through commercials.

Some advertisers paid premiums of 40% or more for the spots, according to ad buyers and network executives. But the prices weren’t high enough to match what Fox would have made selling more ads at standard prices, says Jon Nesvig, Fox’s president of ad sales.

“Advertisers liked it,” Mr. Nesvig says. “But it doesn’t seem to be economically viable in a year where there is the emphasis on price that there seems to be.”

Still, Fox plans to use the strategy in limited instances, such as for special events or premieres, a network spokeswoman says.

Here’s the first official promo for season 2 of Fringe, which will air this fall on Fox. This promo also confirms Kirk Acevedo and John Noble’s claim that they’ve already filmed a few scenes for next season.
