Beyond Fringe Concept Art

by Roco on July 2, 2008 · 2 comments

Fringe Concept brought to LifeI know that many of you Fringe fans have been amazed by the imagery in the Fringe on-air advertising. The smoke face, geometric leaf, embryo apple and phi-frog have made most of us do a double-take upon seeing them, realising that what we were looking at was actually something entirely different.

The people responsible for bringing the FOX concept art to life is a company called Buster Design:

Says Jonas Morganstein, Buster’s Executive Creative Director and Executive Producer, “When Michael Vamosy and Justin Owens from FOX showed us their print campaign for ‘Fringe,’ we knew their approach would translate well to on-air. The print campaign features a series of elements found in nature, like a leaf or an apple, that appear to look normal at first. But after closer inspection, you realize there are incongruous elements in the imagery – a geometric pattern in the leaf and two human embryos inside the apple. To translate these concepts into a series of 10-second teaser promos, we decided to create that same sense of surreal discovery, by opening the visuals on a normal (though eerie) scene, and then slowly revealing a tweaked/unusual detail. Our challenge was to amp up the show’s promise of mysterious storytelling, while keeping the imagery subtle enough for the viewer to say, ‘Woa– did I just see what I think I saw?”

Michael Vamosy, Senior Vice President, Design, FOX, “Buster did a great job of bringing our ‘Fringe’ icons to life. We’ve been using these icons in an interesting and mysterious way to lure viewers into the show with a visual puzzle. By seeing these elements move and listening to the sound design that Buster created for us, our viewers get a chance to react to them in a whole new way.”

Said Justin Owens, Director, Broadcast Design, FOX, “Buster took the already intriguing and mysterious icons from ‘Fringe’ to a whole new level. They pushed past the expected and delivered, well, the unexpected. They not only helped to graphically build the entrance to the rabbit hole, but helped send viewers right down it as well.”

Kurt Spenser, Buster Creative Director & Head of Production, adds that, “Michael Vamosy and Justin Owens always stand at the forefront of exciting new promotional ideas. It’s an honor to be right there with them on this campaign. The new ‘Fringe’ franchise will no doubt break new ground not just on television, but across all media, and it’s awesome to be part of that creative team at the early stages.”

Well done guys, great work all round. Those images – the concept, design and the execution – are truly fantastic, and it shows that you know how to spark the imagination, whilst remaining true to the concept of Fringe.

Just a question though – who’s responsible the Flower design? Also well designed. Although the one which has received the most buzz online has to surely be the six-fingered hand.

AUDIO: Two New Fringe Radio Ads!

by Roco on July 2, 2008 · 3 comments

FOX have followed up their 3 previous Fringe radio spots with 2 brand new ones.

The first, titled “Cruise”, is an SOS message from a sea cruiser which is stranded off the coast of ‘Patagonia’. The tape then rewinds and the message is deciphered to reveal an underlying message – “FIND..THE..PA..TURN!”. Listen below:

Download:

The 2nd audio titled “Stories”, is a conversation between Mrs Reed and a detective, she tells him that her husband died in a wreck, and that after she visited him at the morgue he came back to life. The “FIND THE PATTERN” and “FOX” voiceovers play out the audio. Listen below:

Reanimation, anyone?

These are all very cool and definetely suggest that the underlying game, if you will, has already started. I’m not saying it’s definetely an ARG, but FOX are certainly planting seeds and throwing us breadcrumbs. I have to give them props..a week ago I was thinking that they were slacking.

Oh, and patagonia, that’s fake, right? Gotta love convenience.

Fox have posted an intriguing video on their youtube page. Seemingly, they want us to understand the monster of the beast that will be Fringe. The video introduces some of the real-life Fringe concepts (or realities) and certainly whets my appetite for the show. Check it out:

We should probably keep tabs on Dannion Brinkley (the guy in the video), seeing as FOX either brought him in on the Fringe viral.

Fox Launch Fringe Radio Spots

by Roco on July 1, 2008 · 2 comments

FOX have begun airing several ‘radio spots’ in their bid to bring Fringe to the attention of the masses. Listen to the three ads via the player:

TV Week have been covering the story and report the following:

As befits a show from Mr. Abrams (“Lost”), many of the promotions will carry an air of intrigue, with viewers and listeners having to do some searching in order to figure out just what it is they’ve seen or heard. The tagline for many of the promotions will be, “Imagine the impossibilities.”

Radio ads begin running this week in 10 major markets. But instead of the usual “Watch ‘Fringe’ this fall on Fox” spots, the net is running ads that don’t mention the show at all.
One spot is for a fictional car dealership—Abrams Auto, natch—that’s suddenly interrupted by static and a creepy voice that urges listeners to “find the pattern.”
Another ad will have listeners thinking they’ve tuned into a police scanner, with a cop mentioning an incident at “Abrams and 4th.” The cop suggests the incident might be linked to “the pattern.”
A third spot is a fictional news brief that makes mention of, yup, a “pattern.”

While some of the spots do feature a quick mention of Fox, nothing else indicates they’re promoting a TV show. Ms. Bernard said the network is betting listeners will start investigating—and when they do so, Fox will be ready.

The network has struck agreements with major search engines so that when consumers type in words such as “pattern,” Fox’s Web site for “Fringe” will come up in the results.

The Hollywood Reporter has more:

The Fox network is hoping listeners will piece together these mysterious fragments and realize there is indeed a pattern — one that leads straight to the network’s tentpole fall series “Fringe.”

The ads are part of Fox’s innovative new ad campaign for the J.J. Abrams action drama that the network hopes to use to jump-start its fall season. Although the network declined to release specific dollar figures, the campaign represents Fox’s largest scripted series marketing effort in years.

The campaign will feature cryptic messages that encourage fans to search on the Internet for more information. Fans of Abrams’ hit ABC drama “Lost” and last year’s theatrical release “Cloverfield” are familiar with the tactic, so much so that Abrams’ name is incorporated into the radio ads as a clue.

“Our radio goal was definitely to not say ‘Fringe,’ ” said Laurel Bernard, senior vp marketing at Fox. “We didn’t want them to sound in any way like a traditional radio spot. We wanted them to be disruptive and a little mysterious sounding.”

The campaign also includes online ads placed on Web sites outside of the usual entertainment hubs to catch viewers attention in unique locations. Users on such sites as Automobile.com and recipe site FamilyOven.com will see mysterious ads encouraging them to “Imagine the Impossibilities.”

“They will be very quick sort of messages, leading people to nondescript Web sites that will ultimately lead them back to ‘Fringe,’ ” Bernard said.

With the campaign, Fox is getting an early start on its fall marketing. The network’s off-air marketing efforts usually don’t being until six weeks before a series premiere.

The “Scanner” radio spot catches my attention the most, the reference of “Abrams and 4th” seems like a good Internet hunting/googling starting point. We should perhaps also pay particular attention any to numbers, seeing as such devices were/are a big part of LOST’s viral/mythos.

Let us know if you find anything thing out there in Interweb-land!

A new official Fringe site has recently gone live – imaginetheimpossibilities.com. FOX have obviously been investing in some Google advertising, as many people have reported coming across the links whilst searching for “Fringe” online.

At the time of writing the content for the new site is the same as that on http://www.fox.com/fringe/, but expect it to be updated with new goodness soon!

DC Releasing Fringe Comic Prequel

by Roco on July 1, 2008 · 2 comments

Fringe Comic Prequel Coming SoonUSAToday broke the news that made all Fringe and Comic fans weak at the knees – a 6-part Fringe comic book, and that’s not all, it’s going to be a prequel!

The hip media empire of J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost, Cloverfield, the next Star Trek film) expands into comic books this fall when DC Comics offers a prequel to his upcoming TV series on Fox, Fringe. Writers and artists are being decided, but DC says the comic version will hit the stands on Aug. 27, two weeks before the two-hour premiere airs on Sept. 9.

The 6-part “miniseries” will retail at $2.99, DC Comics has more:

From J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the team behind the upcoming film Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III and the hit show Alias, comes Fringe, a new TV series that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between science fiction and reality. The mysteries start here, in a special miniseries leading up to the premiere of Fringe on FOX on September 9!

Personally I can’t wait for this, the show is perfect for the comic medium, and will hopefully provide us fans with a bit more back-story to the show, it’s characters and that freaky fringe-science.

Makes me wonder whether LOST might have had a comic series sooner had JJ stayed at the helm?
