NEWS: Say Goodbye to September + Pals for 7 Weeks

September bluesAs initially reported by the FutonCritic, FOX will be putting Fringe on a seven week hiatus from February. The mid-season schedule sees the Fringe “winter finale” air Feb. 4th with the remaining 7 episodes returning from April 1st (not an April Fools!).  FOX newbiePast Life is taking over the Thursday slot for 6 episodes from Feb. 11th. Good luck Past Life, you’ll need it!

There are probably two main points of contention amongst Fringies – first, we have the show taking an enormous break, denting whatever continuity the story has – not to mention giving the “all-important” casual viewers more time to forget which one Olivia is (really). And upon its return, Fringe will go straight back into the hazardous Thursday slot to once again slog it out with heavyweights like Greys and Office. Ouch!

Reading around the Interweb, some people seem to think this is the death nail – a sign that FOX has given up on Fringe. I’m thinking that the situation could be better, but there’s no need to be overly dramatic just yet. Mid-season breaks are fairly common place, and while there is still a chance of Fringe improving on its live ratings and DVR audience share we can still be somewhat optimistic. Things could be far worse – look at Dollhouse (RIP), and if the creators decide tell the story in the best way possible (i.e. serial), then we might yet have a third season. Of course Fringe could have done with another year building its audience in a more comfortable time-slot, but if the show can trend upwards from here it will be quite an achievement. I guess it’s a wait and see situation.

What…the…####. Do they WANT this show to fail? Another humongous hiatus?

Look, last year Fringe had the momentum and the interest to keep people’s interest. This year has been much slower, and the ratings are in decline. A 7 damn week hiatus will kill this show.

Fox doesn’t know what to do with Fringe. They can say that they support the show all that they want, but actions speak louder than words. They are giving up a big pile of call flop and calling it a show. I have to admit, I don’t know if I am committed enough to this show at this point to return after 7 weeks. I have been so disappointed this season.

Well, GLEE’s also getting a big break and the show’s quite a hit, so I wouldn’t say it means FOX gave up on FRINGE just yet.
But, yeah, I’m sure it wont help the ratings. I really have no idea why they just don’t give us another time-slot and put a more popular show on Thursday night. I’m certain American Idol could beat Grey’s Anatomy quite easily.

At least the hiatus will be during the Winter Olymics coverage on NBC. You don’t want to compete with that.

Hmm…sweeps, and the olympics. Both very true. Maybe they are committed after all? But all i can say is, after this hiatus 1) Fringe better kick into high gear and 2) FOX better put it on a better slot.

FOX did this last year to Fringe, and they’re doing it to Glee. Plus we don’t want Fringe to compete with the Olympics. FOX is protecting the show.

not the greatest idea, but yeah, the olympics seems like a real reason for this, let’s just hope :), I read somewhere that the episode on april 1st it’s about the past, before our team, I will be waiting for it, if we want the show to survive we also have to watch it. :)

Okay, if Fox is doing this because of the Olympics then I can live with that, but when they come back they have got to move the overall storyline. I speak only for myself when I say that if they aren’t going to move the larger, overall storyline then I don’t have much interest in this show. I am not a case of the week watcher. I like serialized episodes.

So here’s a question. What about xmas? Is there going to be a long hiatus over xmas as well while they run the usual xmas TV junk?

From February, a break will allow time to write and sit out the winter, i heard they’re in Canada or bean-town or something, land of the cold ass winter. You cant have episodes airing in the spring that have snow on the ground. A break will allow FRINGE ON FOX to film episodes in the spring during the triumphant return from hiatus with 7 episodes to stall the viewers. By the by, hiatus means respite, possibly a long one where they get to enjoy things like rest and holidays and families and pets and lions and tigers and bears o my.

This is a good thing by far, and i hope the people over at FRINGE, HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY AND A MERRY NEW YEAR. As always this message will self destruct.

    NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why all the breaks?!?!?! Here in the UK we had just caught up with fringe (the 3 week ?baseball? break you had meant we had caught up), so i didnt need to worry about what i read on the site (didnt want to risk spoilers).
When does this mean it’ll be back? If i’ve worked it out right, the end/beginning of dec/jan?? And im guessing from what you posted, there will be more breaks again when it comes back!!

    I need more fringe NOW!!!!
