UPDATE: According to TVShowsOnDVD both the Fringe DVD and Blu-Ray will come with a “collectable lenticular slipcase” where the image on the cover will change according to your angle of looking at it. Here’s an updated ‘example’ below from TVShowsOnDVD..and I should stress that this is only an example – the final product may vary!:
Very Fringe-y.
Yesterday we brought you news on the Fringe DVD release date, now here’s a look at the new and improved cover art for the Fringe Season 1 DVD and Blu-Ray (click above for a larger view). To be honest I quite like them. That they purely focus on the 3 main characters isn’t a problem for me because their expressions say so much, and this first season was largely about getting to know them (not all Peter fans will agree with that). Also, the half-face imagery (which I’m presuming was influenced Fringe-Forum’s header..yeah, we’re ahead of the game
) is perfect for the alternate universe theme that defined the first season.
I also like the absence of color – the black and white visual make it one slick-looking DVD. I mean, if you’re a fan of the show and you’ve got money to treat yourself, you’re hardly going to walk or click past it are you? So well done to the designer on that front.
You know what also deserves some credit? The Fringe font. Not only did the in-show location titles end up working a treat, but the title font looks as fresh as ever. Was it JJ. who came up with that as well? Is there anything the man doesn’t do?
Also, quick note: the Blu-Ray disc cover that you may still be seeing on Amazon is a place-holder (the one with the glyphs) and wont be making the final product. It was nice and all, but I like the fact that the main difference between the DVD and the Blu is the blue strip along the top.
