Although we got a good dose of Observer-action in the last episode of Fringe, it left most of us with more questions that answers. Personally, that’s the way I like it! If Fringe is to go on for many more seasons to come we need the overarching mysteries to keep us intrigued.
Check out the video above to see the cast give their best guesses as to who the Observers are and what they want, and check below the jump for our lingering Observer questions.
- They are named after months. But does that really mean there are 12 of them? Should we be looking into name meanings? Now that one of them (August) is dead, will he be replaced, or will they carry on without him?
- They’re mortal. For me, that’s a pretty big piece of their puzzle. But what happens to them once they’ve gone? September seemed very keen to collect August before he died -- what did he do with the body?

- They Observe Time. They are seemingly able to see outside the constraints of human perception and view the past, present and future as happening all at once. So what is it they’re looking for? Is it a moment, an object or a person? Or are they simply here to prevent the reality-smash? (is that in-line with the “natural course of events”?)
- Speaking of objects, what was the beacon for and where (when) did it come from?
- The Observer Kid. Why was he stashed away in an abandoned warehouse? Is he “an Observer in training” -- as Joshua Jackson put it? Are they trying to understand us better by allowing one of them to be raised amongst us? Was he abducted Ala Peter? Why was he being pursued by the C.I.A.? Is he really a young September in some kind of time paradox (no doubt created by Walter)?
- What really happened between September, Peter and Walter on that fateful night down at the lake? Was that the moment Walter brought Peter over from the other side? Did September give Peter ability upon saving him? Did this make Peter “important”..or was he always important, hence September saving him in the first place?
- The Observers have rules, but who are the rule-makers..who do they answer to? (future Walter, Bell, government?)
There are of course many more questions surrounding our monthly pals, and I’m sure we’ll have more time to delve into their mythology -- starting with tonight’s brand new episode, although I suspect we’ll be back to playing spot the Observer for a while yet.
