Genius In A Bottle - Cautionary Tale
The first six episodes of Fringe has offered an intriguing question - What do we do with the geniuses, those whose minds can shape the world, whose inventions can offer cures, whose dreams can be shared but so often become mankind’s nightmare? What do we do with the Walter Bishop’s and the William Bell’s? Do we hide them away, dimming their lights to shade mankind from the possibilities of their creations? Or, do we embrace the Bishop’s and the Bell’s, do we take the chance and and hope that their ethics will not diminish? That their work will not fall into the wrong hands? That theirs is the evolutionary path that was intended?
As we have seen, Walter’s work has been at the root of so many Pattern-events, whilst his former colleague, William, has seemingly benefited (Massive Dynamic), as have so many others - the Clause Penrose’s, the Jacob Fischer’s, the INtREPUS’, to name a few. Who can be trusted with such power, when even the ‘good guys’ get-off on unethical scientific application. Worryingly, we are yet to see Walter condemn an act of devastation or human torture that has been inflicted by some of his peers. Instead he has positively relished the opportunity to problem solve, to flex his mind and his imagination, just as many fans have relished the opportunity to “find the pattern”. But shouldn’t Walter show more concern for consequences of his work? For such a lovable guy, it’s hard to know where to stand with Walter at times. When he finally unlocks the ‘hidden’ parts of his mind, will he be an angel..or a monster? Will anyone be around the observe the consequences?
