Fringe Typewritten Message #4 – North and South Poles Still Exist

by Roco on November 12, 2010 · 7 comments

A new “Fringe Now” Typewritten Message has been activated over at the Fringe Sprint site. To unlock the exclusive secret message from the other side, you’ll need to crack the glyph code.

But if you’re not at your glyph-cracking best today, fear not, we have it covered below the jump.

The glyph code is ESCAPE. Once entered here, you’ll unlock the secret video featuring Altlivia communicating with Secretary Walternate, informing him that the North and South poles ‘Over Here’ still exist. (Because in the world of  slightly non-canon, I guess he didn’t know):

VEGETATION IS STRONG. RAINFALL CONSISTENT IN THE TEMPERATE ZONES.

WHAT ABOUT ELYSIUM?

IT DOESN’T SEEM TO EXIST, SIR. BUT THERE’S NO NEED YET. BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH POLES ARE STILL THERE.

[via]

Contrivances aside, it’s a neat little tidbit. Building on the previous typewritten message it gives us a possible indication of why the polar bears Over There mutated. (as speculated last time round by Laura in the comments).

It’s also interesting to further understand how the different, and in many cases, extreme conditions on the other side have forced their in hand in developing things like Elysium (ref) to keep their world ticking over.

Maybe I missed something, but I’m not sure what ‘Elysium’ is or what it does. Also, I wasn’t aware that they didn’t have North or South poles over there. If that is the case, then they’ve lost their planetary magnetic field which means they’re open to all kinds of radiation from space. Is this why their climate seems to be going into the dunker, plants dieing, and like that?

All of a sudden, I’m so confused…

I took it as there are still polar ice caps at the north and south poles.

I think it means the ice caps. Elysium is part of Greek mythology. It’s basically a paradise for the good and heroic. Ever seen Gladiator (which I know takes place in Rome, but cultures steal stuff all the time)? It’s a huge theme in that.

So it seems that the other side has constructed something to counter global warming or whatever it is, the Blight, and dubbed it Elysium.

In Greek mythology, Elysium was a section of the Underworld. The Elysian Fields, or the Elysian Plains, were the final resting places of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous. The ruler of Elysium varies from author to author, most think of the ruler as Kronos or Cronus. Who was also identified in classical antiquity with the Roman deity Saturn. He also became the god of “human time”, i.e., calendars, seasons, and harvests. Just throwing it out there.

Yes, Elysium was sort of a classical precursor to the Norse Valhalla (or the Klingon Stovokor :) ). I’m guessing it’s something a little more scientific Over There. What is still an open question.
