As for whacked out theories, try this one for size:
I’m not sure Alter-Walter was unaware that his son was being kidnapped. In the dream scene of Dream Logic; you see a Walter (we’re all assuming Alter-Walter, right?) in the mirror right before Peter is snatched from the side If Peter’s bed was directly in front of the mirror (which is what it looks like); then could Alter-Walter have been looking on while his son was being taken by our Walter? For what purpose? Some ‘exchange?’ Could Peter have be ‘borrowed’?
