Walter falls of the bridge, into the water?

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 8

I believe that’s Walternate in the robe. The robe itself seems a bit too fancy for our Walter. If our Walter were in Fauxlivia’s apartment, I’d expect him to have those bear slippers on his feet AND NOTHING ELSE.

:P

I wonder what our Liv is going to be up to in this eppy. I mean, how much alone time do her and Peter need? The least they can do is save the universe first…again…

Ah okay, this furthers the theory that Alt-Broyles is doing this because Jones is going to help his son.

Or you could intrepret it the other way and say that Jones is coercing Alt-Broyles by threatening his family.

I wonder if Diane Broyles suspects that her husbant is a shapeshifter, like Patricia Van Horn in 3.04.

But he isn’t a shapeshifter.

I wasn’t expecting to see Broyles’ wife in this episode. It will be nice to see her again.

I’ll admit that I’m a bit worried about what they’re going to reveal about Broyles and why he’s been helping Jones. I think it’s largely because they made him out to be such a noble character in Season 3, and I don’t want them to ruin that with this new plot. I prefer to think that in this new timeline, he died, similar to how he did last season, except this time, after he died, they replaced him with a shapeshifter. If that’s the case, then it doesn’t change anything about the alternate Broyles character — we can still rest confident that he died while fighting for the right things and that he never betrayed the values he believes in or the people he cares about.

But if this really is alternate Broyles and he has somehow been coerced, threatened, or deceived into helping Jones, it lessens his character for me. Alternate Broyles never would have agreed to help Jones, even if he did threaten his family. He’s too strong to give in to something like blackmail. He would have done everything he could to protect his family while simultaneously committed himself to tracking down Jones. Similarly, he wouldn’t have been selfish enough to join Jones just because he promised to help his son somehow. He would never stoop that low and be willing to sacrifice countless lives, no matter how much he wanted to help his son. (It reminds me of the father in Os who was experimenting and killing those boys all to perfect his “cure” for his son, when all along his son was happy and felt he didn’t need to be cured. It would be the same thing here — Broyles’ son may not have a perfect life, but he doesn’t necessarily need to be cured, either… unless that, too, is different in this timeline).

The only one that would slightly work would be if Broyles was somehow tricked into helping Jones, thinking it was the right thing to do. But even that one doesn’t work for me because by this point, I would think he has seen enough to know that Jones is not exactly looking out for the well-being of the world. And even if he had gotten too far involved so that he was trapped and couldn’t back out once he realized what Jones was doing, I would still think he would be doing more to fight Jones rather than continuing to help him.

All that said, I guess we’ll find out on Friday. I’m not saying they can’t have it be alternate Broyles and still have it make sense, but I think it would be tricky to pull that off. So at this point, I am still very much against this idea. However, it is possible that they will develop the story in a way that it is really alternate Broyles but he has remained true to the character despite his allegiance with Jones. If that’s the case, I will be fine with it. As long as it’s believable.

I agree 100% with this. Peter’s absence from the timeline certainly had a profound impact on our universe, but I don’t think it would have totally altered the moral perspective of Colonel Broyles, a character he (as far as I’m aware) never even interacted with in the original timeline.

Some people say Broylenate has been showing signs of human emotions and regret since he started working with Jones, but they’re forgetting that these shapeshifters are human. As we saw in Everything In Its Right Place, the shapeshifters are capable of feeling sympathy and showing mercy, and it’s possible that the shapeshifter Broylenate is simply regretting the deaths that have happened for Jones’s cause.

I agree and disagree.

@ Ben
I agree that peters absence from the timeline would absolutely not have affected broylenates morales. However, peters absence has meant that DRJ is still alive, therefore DRJ was successful in his plan to cross over to the other side (1.20) and as we know now has broyles as a mole in the alternate fringe division. I think it likely that he is threatening broyles’s family and that broylenate is infact NOT a shapeshifter.

@mlj102
If elements of the old timeline are still correct, broylenate had one of his sons kidnapped by the candy man (was that his name? i cant remember) so i think it perfectly reasonable that a man who had gone through that would be very pliable to threats against his family, especially from someone as dangerous as DRJ. I think Broyles would put his family first before thinking of his morales. You will remember when he helped olivia in 3.08 he the only one in danger. His family would not have been harmed by his possible death (only emotionally).

JM

That is a fair response, it really could go either way. It would certainly be interesting if Broyles wasn’t a shapeshifter, the sentimentalist in me wants to remember him as an honourable character.

I guess we’ll probably find out tomorrow night!
