Fringe Spoiler: Upcoming Episode To Deal In Consequences

by Roco on January 5, 2011 · 38 comments

Fringe springs back to life from Friday January 21st – a new home for continuing adventures. But where might those adventures take us?

Well, noble warriors, if you’ve already opened this morning’s first spoiler jar, then you’ll have an idea of one upcoming storyline. And below the jump we turn out another little snippet.

Back away slowly if you don’t want to know anything about the future.

TV Line‘s Michael Ausiello apparently has molebabies in the alternate universe – they’ve issued whispers that “an upcoming episode will flash back to 1985 to show the consequences of Walter’s kidnapping of Peter from the alt-universe”.

Intwisting, indeed. Experiencing Boy Wonder’s kidnapping (consequences and all) from the alternate universe’s perspective is another interesting lens to view the story through.

Cheers to physicsgirl for sending this through.

What does this news do to your Excite-O-meter?

Fringe moves to Fridays starting January 21st, 9/8c, on Fox.

That’s awesome! You’re a good Fringe friend. I’ve converted three new converts during the lowatus, and I think I may have brought two strays back into the fold. Fringe isn’t just a show, it’s a mission! :)

LOL! I like that, “Life without Fringe is no life.” Very awesome phrase! I might use that for my catchword phrase :-) I keep talking about Fringe at work, and spreading the word. And rewatching episodes. It’s down to 16 sleeps now!! still sounds like too many…..and i would love to see what happened when Walter took Peter – that horrible awesome whirlpool in the Bronx? I think? this has to be one of the best tidbit spoilers ever.

Nice! This episode will probably as good as Peter (maybe even better!) and there’s going to be a new change in the title sequence for the episode! Fringe is great, Excite-o-meter = 10!

Good to see them returning to the AU. I was hoping they wouldn’t just throw it away, but I don’t see how they could after putting so much into the characters from that universe. just a little over 2 weeks!

Michael Ausiello is nice and all, but this has been floating around the Television Without Pity Fringe board for awhile. In fact, I find out many things weeks before there.

I am really excited about this, too!
AND: maybe we can read this as a good sign for Fringe as well. There going to explore the Olivia-Stepfather issue and the Peter-Kidnapping aftermath. would they really do this instead of the greater storyline if there were only 12 more episodes to go?
as real is just a matter of perception ;) I am going to read it that way.

IMDB (not always an accurate source BTW) lists Orla appearing in
one of the 2011 episodes:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0103699/

If this ep is set in the alt-universe, maybe we’ll see Sam Weiss (he musta
done something to get Walternate to leave a warning about Weiss on his blackboard) or even William Bell. Maybe they shot some additional footage
of Nimoy during season 2 that they’re going to use in an upcoming episode?

Redverse Eighties opening title sequence? Excellent!
Apropos of nothing, I was thinking the other day of different title sequences they could come up with…how about a time travel ep with a Victorian title sequence in sepia and catch phrases like “phrenology”, “fingerprinting”, “blood transfusions” and “absolute zero”?

This will be awesome…..love going back in time…..excited to find out what did really happen when Peter left the Alt-universe. Might help me with my theories about Walternate. mmmmm….i hope they use the retro Fringe intro again. I loved that one!

This will be great! They didn’t give us much of Walternate in the OT episodes to feel sorry for him yet. He still came off as cold and heartless. This will hopefully move us closer to his motivations and get us really feeling for the guy. Or not.

I would also love to see another 1985 episode featuring Olivia.

It was big. We know that. I mean, Peter has laws named after him in the alt-universe.

And yes, I hope this move does signal confidence in Fringe’s fruture.

It’s just phraseology, but I don’t see how “the consequences of Walter’s kidnapping of Peter from the alt-universe” necessarily means that it will be “from the alternate universe’s perspective”. It could be entirely about how Walter and his wife indoctrinated Peter into his new world.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who isn’t necessarily convinced that this little spoiler is meant to imply that the episode will be based over there. Actually, the thought never crossed my mind until I started reading comments about it. I just figured it would take place over here, as Peter or Walter’s memories of what happened after Walter decided to keep Peter.

There’s plenty to explore with all that took place over here, like how Walter and Elizabeth came to terms with the truth of what they did, and how young Peter reacted to the subtle differences. How much was he aware of that had changed? Was he still sick on occasion? What was his relationship like with his “parents”? I think that kind of explanation of the past could really explain a lot about how they came to be at the point they were in the Pilot, as well as providing insight into the lives and the relationships of the characters now.

Plus, unless they are planning on doing two flashback episodes, I figure this is the same episode that will feature a young Olivia. And it would make more sense if we were seeing our Olivia at that age, as opposed to alternate Olivia.

I can see how people are interpreting the above statement as meaning the episode will be set over there, and I agree that would make an interesting episode (I want to see the fall out of Peter’s kidnapping from that side, too), but I don’t see that there’s any way to conclude for sure that the episode will be over there.

I’m curious to see how they will set up for this episode to be a flashback. With Peter, there was a very clear reason for returning to the past as Walter shared the whole story of how Peter came to be over here. But I’m not quite sure how they’re going to set up this one… Whatever the case, I do hope it will be as much of a success as Peter was!

And, as an additional comment, I also hope that another flashback episode means that we will see a return of Elizabeth, Carla, and perhaps Olivia’s parents, as well. And as a bonus, maybe there would even be an appearance from a young Rachel. I can imagine how thrilled Roco would be with that!

Geez i hope you are both right. I mean it would be really interesting to see how Walter and Elizabeth helped Peter to adjust to our universe. There have been plenty of hints about it…especially from Peter early in season 1 referring to his memories of being experimented on. One thing i do hope we get from this flashback episode is more information about just exactly what is wrong with Peter.
I hope we see more of Carla Warren too.
It would also be awesome if the flashback epsiode about Peter is also the same one where they flashback to Olivias childhood. Im wondering now…if Peter and Olivia ever met when they were kids.

But I guess the question is which versions met? Did AltLivia and Peter meet? Did Olivia meet dead Peter?

Maybe the episode will feature both universes. A scene or two with Walternate and alternate Elizabeth trying to cope with the tragedy and trying to find an explanation would be great. I’m very curious about how quickly Walternate came to the conclusion, that it was a Walter from a parallel universe, who stole his son.

“And as a bonus, maybe there would even be an appearance from a young Rachel. I can imagine how thrilled Roco would be with that!”

I never realized what an evil streak you had in you, MLJ! I like it. That made me laugh out loud.

I suppose I never considered that it was actually the Over Here perspective until you said that. Based on Roco’s comment, it appears he thinks it’s Over There. Personally, that’s what I’m hoping for: I want to see how Walternate reacts in the immediate aftermath. How does Elizabethnate handle knowing that she actually saw the kidnapping take place and actually helped? Does the decay of their world begin immediately? Also, during the summer spoilers hinted that there was a connection between alt-Mrs. Dunham and Walternate; is this where it occurred?

I guess because the AU has such clear physical decay almost from the very beginning of Peter’s kidnapping, it would be thrilling to show that decay starting. We could see a young Broylenate, and because Mrs Broylnate did refer to him at that time, I was thinking of that as clue and once this was announced, it seemed to me that we are going to see the AU again. I think it would be thrilling and sad to see what happened there because of Peter’s kidnapping, and see if they have any idea how to solve the decay (other than blowing our world up).

conversely, it would be just as interesting to see Elizabeth and Walternate coping with a young Peter who doesn’t understand why his parents are different over here in small ways, and how quickly he forgets ‘over there’. Remember he dreamed about Over There for a very long time, so I don’t think he ‘forgot’ so much as put it out of his conscious mind so he wouldn’t think he was crazy while growing up. No wonder he coudln’t tell the difference between Olivia and AltLiv! This is the same man who couldn’t remember the day his life changed forever, either. Still doesn’t either, as far as we’ve been told.

I’ve always had the idea in the back of my mind that Olivia and Peter met as children at some point. Not, mind you, that we’ve seen any evidence to support this; it’s just a gut feeling on my part. When it was mentioned that Olivia was able to identify objects from the AU under the influence of Cortexiphan, I immediately thought that one of the objects may have been Peter–possibly she flashed over to the AU as in The Road Not Taken and in Walternate’s tank experimentsand saw him, or they could have met later, after he was brought over to this universe by Walter.
