Here’s the finale minutes of last night’s Fringe finale for those of you who missed them. There are several interesting things in this final scene that caught my eye, most of them I’ll expand on in another post, but keep an eye out for the blue lights when Olivia is in the elevator -- I think this proves once and for all that they are not simple styling, but rather, they are indicators of travel, as I speculated several months ago.
Further to that, it seems that Olivia didn’t just travel from one reality to another..she skipped through several before arriving in the ‘belly of the beast’, so to speak. (the people appearing and disappearing in the lift, along with clever camera work and sound FX, tell us that she entered several realities).
To be honest, this is satisfying not just because I (and others) predicted the significance of these lights, but the process of identifying them and formulating early ideas was a blast. More than that though, it also tells us that Bad Robot don’t just throw in a bunch of superficial elements for styling sake. As a fan of the show who likes to look for the ‘signposts’ to the bigger mysteries, this give me great confidence in their ability going into next season.
To be honest, I thought they gave the game away too easily in “Ability” -- they retouched the intro featuring David Jones’ teleportation to Little Hill and added copious amounts of blue lighting to the original scene from “Safe”. Prior to that they were more subtle and ambiguous. Nonetheless, it was fun trying to second guess the creators. The other possibility that I had in mind, was that the lights indicated observation from another reality. This could also come into play next season.

I still have many questions after the season finale:
1. Who put Walter in St. Claire’s and Why? Was it Alter-Walter for protection? Was it the Observer?
2. What was the consequences of Walter “taking” Alter-Peter for his world? For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction-does this still apply to alter-worlds?
3. If Jones once worked for Bell, and Bell is really a good guy, are there other rogue cells fighting for the ZTF?
Just a few things I wondered. Going to be a long wait for season 2
All we have is speculation at the moment
1) I don’t think it could have been his alter, unless he arranged it through other sources. People would notice if Walter put Walter in St. Claire’s. Though I do have a feeling that Walter didn’t go into St. Claire’s completely unwillingly. The Observer is an interesting shout, but again, he’d probably have to have done it through other sources.
Of course we shouldn’t discount the very likely idea that he was put in the institution because of the fire in the Lab.
2). I agree with you, there surely has to be some consequences. Cause and effect.
3). I wouldn’t say that Bell is the “good guy”. Far from it, the ZFT manifesto, however Walter wants to present it, contains some pretty aggressive and unethical overtones.
There probably are other former ZFT-related cells out there. We may have seen a few of them this season without knowing it.
Are the people in the scenes with the blue lights aware of them? I’ve not seen any indication that they are, no glancing up towards them. This has always made me lean to your idea of observation from elsewhere.
Good point. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a character show awarness of the blue lights – the closest we’ve come is probably that finale scene with Liv in the elevator. She sensed ‘something’, although it wasn’t the lights.
They seem to be more for our benifit, although it also speaks to the idea that there are things all around us that we cannot see because we are not at a high enough dimension, or what have you. Could we, the viewers, be privy to the lights because we are in a different dimension from the characters? I’m possibly going to far with that, it’s something I’ve wondered for a while.
You’re right, the observation from elsewhere idea would perhaps explain the lights better – although we know for a fact that Olivia travelled and blue lights appeared…
I actually squeed when I saw the blue lights in the elevator and knew immediately that the Blue Lights theory you guys thought up early on was spot on! *high five!*
*high fives back*
Jeff, as for consequences of Walter taking Alter-Peter… maybe the ultimate Big Bad will be that reality’s Walter, whose son was kidnapped by “our” Walter…
Ellen, that is an interesting prediction. Has anyone stopped to ask how Nina and William Bell are able to communicate electronically if they are in different worlds? Also, just because Jones crossed over into one world, if Bell is in fact in the “belly of the beast” Jones might have several more to go.
If our William Bell is operating out of an office in the WTC in the alter-reality, what is the alter-reality’s William Bell up to?
William Bell and Walter Bishop could share monogrammed hankies, if they were so inclined.
