Of course, being serious for the moment (which I have to be, being the equivalent of a Trekkie for Fringe season 1-3
): the implications are that season 3′s ‘future Peter’ altered the course of events when ‘present Peter’ stepped into the machine, by showing him the future.
So we don’t know precisely what was supposed to have happened when ‘present Peter’ used the machine to defend our universe, destroying the red-verse and, inadvertently, fatally wounding ours.
Possibly the picture depicted Peter phasing into the red-verse (as we saw starting to happen when Peter’s ghostly image appeared in the red-verse BBM in TDWD) to unleash a death-blow, and the destruction we saw was happening in Walternate’s universe.
I think if you trigger universe-ending cosmic energies with a doomsday device, the planetary hurricane of chaos you unleash, might just rip off an item of clothing or two.
