FRINGE Digital Comic Goes Beyond The Web

BEYOND-THE-FRINGE

DC Comics has confirmed that the Fringe digital comic, Beyond The Fringe, will finally be released into a collected print edition this September.

Per Seriable:

Jhonen Vasquez, who penned several installments of the 12-chapter comic series, said:

“I’m a huge fan of Fringe,” “So I kept my story pretty anchored to the show. I didn’t have characters flying around or becoming ninjas.”

The comic series is based on “what if” questions that mesh well with the serial’s storytelling structure, including Vasquez’s Nina-centric tale of her early days with Walter and William Bell, and Fringe star Joshua Jackson’s comic-book writing debut about Peter’s experiences in an alternate timeline.

While the stories in the comics are not necessarily canon to the show — which is to say that Fringe fans don’t need to read the comics to understand the show or its story arcs — Vasquez notes that the producers were indispensable in helping create this extended universe for the Fringe faithful.

“With them helping me avoid some things and [plant] other things, it just gives the fans something they can recognize…if they [look] that deeply. Which I know they do!”

This is another piece of feel-good news for Fringe fans, who in the space of a few days have been treated to an early Season 5 promo trailer, the announcement of the Season 4 DVD and Blu-ray, and news that the show’s Comic-Con panel will be held in Hall H — the Boom-Boom-Machine of exhibit halls (i.e the largest at the annual convention).

Update: You can download digital issues of Beyond The Fringe here.

Meeeeee too!!!!! I even went to the local comic book store to see if there was ANY way he could get them into print for me (even if just in a binder) I didn’t even really care what it would cost. I just wanted to hold them. YAY YAY!!! (I never dreamed I would be so excited for a comic book ;)

This is great news and very good marketing. They were missing a large audience by being limited to digital.

Very excited to hear this but I’m confused…wasn’t there supposed to be 14 chapters originally?? Are they done releasing new ones? I was really hoping for more. Also, does A and B of a chapter count as 1 chapter or 2 different chapters even though their both part of chapter 1 for example?

what I dont get is I have a comic book, a tangible comic book with the picture above on the cover called “Peter and the Machine” which I picked up at my local comic book store. How does it fit into all of this? it says “Beyond the Fringe #1″. Is it the first in this series or is it some anomaly? because it collects all the peter and the machine stories from online but without the part B chapters. I dont get it! what did I buy/what’s coming out now? will it be #2 to what I bought or something else entirely?

also, I think someone once commented on this site about peter and the machine being cannon?

you bought the story written by joshua jackson which explains what happened while peter was in the machine.
this was digitally released as 3 parts (the first 3 “A” chapters) and the comic you bought includes all those 3 parts.

everything else that has been coming out are story by other writer and they are not really canon and therefor not significant.

I suspect what’s coming out now is a comic book that includes all those other “B” stories.

“you bought the story written by joshua jackson which explains what happened while peter was in the machine.” – I mean It explains what happened after he saw the future but while he was still in the machine.

lol np, thanks for the explanation, i was just confused as to how they were going to publish a 12 story comic book series when they had already collected a couple of parts into the peter and the machine book i have. I dont know how many online comics were released/didnt know where they were getting these storiesfrom for this next series of comics but as you said its probably the other digital stories that arent canon and maybe theyll write a few extra to make it to 12 issues?

i mean, there’s 12 online comics (6 A stories & 6 B stories) but the only things im confused about is that they are all really short and wouldnt fill out a print comic each so where are they going to get 12 issues worht? will they include new stuff that wasnt available digitally?

and also, is the book I have part of this series discussed here or i it something else and then they reprint the peter and the machine story again in parts or something?

cause as you said what I have is the first 3 A stories, so if it takes 3 online stories to fill out a print comic, how are they going to do 12 chapters? will it only be like 4 print books or 12 very small ones or what? im confused…

I just looked it up: there are currently 6 chapter A stories (including the “peter and the machine” parts) and 6 chapter B stories.

so I guess what will be released now will be a comic book that includes all of them.

but as I said, the “peter and the machine” comic book is the only really significant one.

yeah i agree. its the only one that’s cannon forsure.

the thing that confused me is that it says 12 chapter series and if they a;ready put the first three digital stories into one continuous chapter, are they going to publish 3 more comics with three stories each (which still wouldnt be 12 chapters, it’d be 10 chapter made up of the rest of the 9 individual online comics and then the peter and the machine story) or what the heck are they gunna do? how are they going to get 12 chapters out of it? is what threw me

I think they will just put all the 12 chapter that are available now including the 3 “peter and the machine” chapters into one release

that would be logical, but it says 12 chapter series which lead me to believe that its going to be more than one book but that isnt necessarily true, youre right it could be 1 12-chapter book

and it says its coming in september so the one i have probably isnt part of it, which, if itll all be 1 book, kinda erks me in that i’ve now bought peter and the machine and to read the other stories i’ll have to buy it again so that makes the book i have obsolete right?

the weird thing is, the book ihave says beyond the fringe #1 which leads me to believe there will be more maybe? and that this is the first book in this series weve been notified about here.

I just wanna know what the heck the book i have is and how it and whats to come fit into the whole fringe comics releases

considering that the first 3 A chapters are “beyond the fringe #1″, maybe that means, the next 3 “B” chapers will be released as “beyond the fringe #2″, the next 3 “A” chapters will be “beyond the fringe #3″ and so on.

this way you would only have to buy three more comic books, since you already have the first.

I guess we just have to wait and see :-)

you know? like why would they release the book I;ve bought itf theyre going to reprint that story? that seems an odd thing for them to do. maybe theyre going to write a 7th A & B story and release all the rest of the digital stories (other than peter and the machine) as the other 11 chapters labelled beyond the fringe #2 through #12? maybe somehow my local comic books store got chapter 1 before the september release or something? i dunno…

does anyone else have peter and the machine in print yet?

the book i have isnt divided into chapters its one continuous peter and the machine story which is hwy i was thinking of it as one chapter, but only 3 more comics is a possibility. yeah we’ll have to wait and see.

I bought the first 3 A chapters digitally and I also have the comic book you have.

yes, it is actually not divided but technically this comic book are the first 3 chapter A stories.

This is True. (considering youve already bought the story twice now, i hope they dont make me buy it again in print and you buy it a total of three times, thats lame and really milking it lol)

The wording of this press release and the sept release date and the fact that the print comic we both have isnt divided into chapters all kinda just confused me cause it didnt all add up in my brain.

thanks for helping me to try and sort it all out.

I just hope they’ve coordinated all of their releases and we dont have to buy the peter story arc AGAIN.

you’re right, we’ll have to wait to know forsure.

I read online, way back, that the print version was available in stores. I went to the local Newbury Comics stores, Barnes and Noble and so on, plus went online to try and find where I could get the print version of the comic book. At the stores they never even heard about the series. The clerks looked at me like I said, *Klaatu, barrada, nikto?*

I’ll just have to look in September. I hope *someone* will have the print comics. I think the second they are released you have to order online or go to stores to get them because the stores will probably not order that many copies, thinking that customers will not be interested.
