A major new arrival is to enter the Fringe fray, according to reports.
via Seriable:
Captain Windmark’s boss is set to enter the Fringe fray. According to reports, James Kidnie has been cast as the big Observer boss and is set to appear in the last three episodes of the sci-fi serial’s final season.
The casting was announced on the Pay Day – I am in Charge radio show. It has yet to be confirmed by Fox or the producers at this time, so take this with a pinch of salt for now. That said, it’s not difficult to imagine that ‘Captain’ Windmark would have those above him.

Windmark has a boss?! I don’t like the sound of this. Why introduce the real big bad so late?

Yeah, that didn’t work too well

Too late for a new big-bad I think.
Windmark would have been fine, or Belly.
Let’s hope this is worth it.

I think it’s a red-Herring, even if he’s Windmark’s boss, he’s someone else’s puppet. (Nina’s or Bell’s)

I always thought there was a grand puppetmaster. I wonder if he’s just the Observers’ boss or if he’s the GRAND-GRAND master referred to in the Pilot episode — the one who’s using the whole workd as his experiment?

Who could be scarier than Windmark? I think I will be watching that one with the lights on.

I don’t get why people are worried about a character coming in too late. Sheesh people, JW has had since last May to figure out the pacing of the show. He said it would be in three acts, like a play, or film. It isn’t unheard of to have a final villain in a film, or play. This season was designed to be watched both as separate chapters, and as one long movie. If you notice the characters rarely if ever change clothes, so this is all happening in the course of maybe two weeks for them. This season’s pacing is meant to be digested a second time around at marathon pace.

The fact that Wyman’s had since last May to pace out the show is exactly why I am concerned.

I hear ya, but I still don’t see a reason for concern. For all we know the final four chapters could be a boulder-dash for the finish line. We could well get a giant download of info in four hours of show time. I feel like the last few episodes alone revealed many of the over-arcing themes of the show if you look hard enough, and read between the lines. I’ve always been one to notice that there are many levels to this series. I feel like it can be watched multiple times especially after certain episodes have aired, and we get a whole new level of revelation for the show. Each twist in the plot adds a new way to view things in the past of the show.

I’m just wondering what he could possibly do in the final 3 episodes that will be more brutal than killing Etta and torturing Walter to really prove that he is the boss of them all.
Guess we will just have to wait and see.

He may not be as brutal as Windmark, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be the guy’s boss, and the one who decided to invade, and the reason Windmark was even in a position to kill Etta in the first place. Think David Robert Jones, then think Amber Bell being his boss. See, there is an example of it being done once before.

You always knew there’d be one. Personally I am glad that there is, I never saw Windmark as the head baldy in charge. i figure the real leader would be of in some castle somewhere, or maybe even some “when”.

Ugh! I wish there was an edit feature I hate it when I re-read my comment and find typos, and other mistakes. “Of” was supposed to be “off”. Oh well.

Back before Letters of Transit, Darth and I thought Windmark might’ve been it; and the actual idea goes back to Michael Massee’s casting in our favorite episode A Short Story About Love.

What if the the head baldy is a descendant of…Henry?
Yes I know, Henry was erased, but one of the questions that remains is why he was never supposed to be born. What if this is a war of dueling timelines? Sorta like the Temporal Cold War from Star Trek Enterprise.
Sorta neat to think about.

What if it has been a giant chess match between two Observers. Windmark, and this guy. What if this guy is in charge of the scientific Observers who appeared to be more benevolent, and Windmark is in charge of the more militaristic Observers (AKA the invaders). This is a big game to see who can claim ultimate power in their world. Will temporal tweaking and non violent time experiments prevail, or will forced submission via a police state prevail. This could very well explain the seemingly difference in the types of Observers (benign vs malignant) we have witnessed. Two warring factions of post modern humans.

Like William Bell explaining to Jones about Bell’s chess moves.
“In this game a skilled one must have above all else, is patience. The board changes, but very slowly.
The art of chess, the art is knowing when a piece is most valuable, and then in that very moment, being willing to sacrifice it.
For in the vacuum created by the loss of what is most precious, opportunity abounds, influence is maximized, and desire becomes destiny.”

I had a similar but slightly different thought earlier. September told Peter in the great mind-meld of TEOAT that the Observers (may HIS group of Observers) were one of countless possible futures for humanity. Your statement and mine could both work. There is some sort of temporal war/game going on, and Windmark and the new Observer represent the different factions.
Truly a geeked-out sci-fi adventure.

What if it’s just a big 1000 year old game of Senet between good and evil, and the entire fourth season was an alternate version of what could have happened if that plane never crashed. WE HAVE TO GO BACK

Finally! I knew Windmark was obviously low end on the authority of Observerland, for one he told Broyles he got his job down here because in the future he “liked animals” and his title is flippin Captain. If this guy is Windmark’s boss he could have many more bosses up, though this makes me feel this guy really is the top dog, perhaps an almost Hitler like figure in 2609. Remember, the future isn’t completely destroyed, and I think the invasion is a process that was supposed to date a veeerrry long time, reworking the atmosphere and getting living conditions ready for the rest of the population. In that sense, Windmark has a pretty crappy job right now, and all the high figures are sitting on their thrones in the future waiting until the dirty work is done before they leave home.

Defeat a ‘colonial governor’ doesn’t simply solve the entire problem-it is not the ‘American’ independence war, it is for the whole world’s!
And we all know, that ‘Captain’ just has the authority over part of the Northern America, not the ‘Big Brother’. He is just a local official as we know from the start…

Windmark could end up being the Barney Fife of the North American Observers. Cool.

Windmark killed Etta though.
Barney Fife could not even secure his gun and it was accidentally discharged on many occasions.

Right. So knowing that, and comparing him to Barney; How much more evil calculating potential does this guy have if he is the Andy?

Wow, could the “plan to beat the Observers” be a machine that transports the team to the future: 2609? Then, the have to defeat the boss character there? I mean, I don’t know if he would come “here” (or would it be now?) if Windmark was defeated. He could just send 100,000 more Observers here to do nothing but hunt down the team. If they get to Windmark, that means they are a real threat. Not to mention, they can see all time at once so they should be able to have an idea that Peter, Olivia, Walter, Astrid, and um….Donald (?) are on a course to defeat them. I think the ONLY way to truly stop the Observers is to go to THEM and kill them. At least, that is what seems to make the most sense to me.
