I agree. Some people “mourn” on Good Fridays and don’t watch TV.

Awww! Sorry about that, Brian. I hope this will make up for it…
The feeling is the same, too. I’ve been on the roller coaster ride since Season 3 :) . Fringe is the only show I follow religiously and I’m not sure how I will survive without it. Reruns maybe?

Lol I was just messing around! And I admit that I didn’t start watching Fringe until last summer so this nervousness is a bit new to me. I dunno what provoked me to do it, but I was bored and bought S1 on DVD last summer and I’ve been hooked ever since. A reduced season 5 isn’t exactly ideal but we can’t be greedy and it’ll be enough to wrap the show up properly! Gotta keep it going!

I’m used to the feeling. It happens every time I watch an episode and wait for the ratings the next day. Lol! Oh well, I would be grateful with a reduced Season 5 but still optimistic for a full season. Fingers crossed!

It was Good Friday, so people were seeing family. We actually only lost 30 000 people, which is such an insignificant number. Ugh, this Nielsen system disgusts me. It will be higher next week and maybe even 1.3 or 1.4 for the special Oberserver 19th episode, with proper advertising :)

That godawful lead-in show (The Finder?) may have had something to do with the drop-off, as well.

Barring any drastic increase in the ratings for the rest of the season, I don’t think ratings alone will determine our renewal chances. It will rest on WB and Fox to negotiate a deal. Come on Fox, bless us with your goodwill for one final time .

The Lincoln Effect, plus the Big Three not part of last night’s narrative. Plus Spring Break and a holiday weekend for a lot of kids, so…

Unfortunately, to a network the number of viewers is secondary or completely immaterial. The 18-49 demo is the one networks are after because its the target of the advertisers that pay the networks. A 1.0 demo means that 1.0% of americans between the ages of 18-49 watched fringe live last night (according to nielson).

While i agree that only losing 30,000 viewers on good friday is very good. The demo going down completely counteracts it.

JM April 7, 2012 at 1:43 pm

I agree with kate about lincoln affecting the ratings. Were down to core audience now, and any character centric episodes or peter disappearing may upset fans but has never actually caused the ratings to go down, thats normally due to holiday weekends, or the show losing fans generally its never a specific thing like that.

And inconsequent story-telling, I might add.
I love Fringe, don’t get me wrong. But Fringe can be frustrating with its “We generally don’t follow up cliffhangers immediately”.

I think fringe has a good chance of renewal if the fanbases activity on twitter and such is taken account of. But i just dont know if networks like fox do take that in to account…

I think it’s not THAT important how the ratings are for every single episode…i think at the end, this season will have an average of 3.1 mio viewers and a 1.2 rating.

so WB and FOX just need to know if those numbers are good enough for a shortened season 5.

and in my opinion, they really should know it by know!!!^^

Hmm…….By now I’m really really tired being scared week by week that my favourite best on TV sci fi show could not get renewed because of the ratings I cannot even enjoy the last 5 episodes not knowing if these are the last episodes of the 4season or of the the series????????so I think this is the high time to make a decision! I can only repeat myself why Fringe deserves a full 5 season: its an outstanding creativ intelligent scifi show with brilliant talented cast and genius writers and producers and incredible crew its already became a Cult show with dedicated strong fanbase all over the world Fringe fans are so passionate that they do this incredibly moving twitter event every fry so if this is Not enough for a renewal than Idon’t know

Surun Tunne April 7, 2012 at 2:48 pm

of course I agree with you.
everyday when I go on fringebloggers I hope to see the headline: FRINGE renewed for a fifth season!

but unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if a show is creative, intelligent and mind-blowing and has amazing actors and so on…
if not enough people are watching and the show doesn’t make money it gets cancelled.
and you can’t really blame the networks for that, they have to run a business after all…

Last week we had the rebound effect:

-No Hunger Games
-No Basketball
-People realising that Fringe was back

This week:

-Not as much urgency to watch it to bring ratings up as people became complacent from last week.
-Perhaps people thought the Wer-cupine plot last week was a turn-off so didn’t come back this week?
-Too much Lincoln in the previews which put people off for this week?
-Not enough of our main three (Olivia, Walter, Peter) this week?

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 9

Underseer April 7, 2012 at 3:48 pm

It has stabilized at 3 million. As others have pointed out, it was a holiday on Friday so some people may have been away. If other Friday shows have suffered similarly in this week’s ratings, then I wouldn’t panic too much over this.

I may be naive, but I think Fox will pay more attention to a week where there’s a level playing field before making a major decision.

I don’t get the US ratings. This 3million must be the week in week out, so how do you lose a point 2 from only a 30,000 drop?

Demographics. The three million that watched it were lacking in the 18-49 year olds that the adverts are catering to. So in other words the same amount of people watched but not the right amount of 18-49 year olds.

It just means older viewers tuned in, but the young 18-49 year-olds didn’t.

While I’m really glad there was a first run episode this past week I would not have held it against the network to schedule a rerun due to it being 1st night of Passover and also Good Friday at he same time. To me, the 4 weeks in a row earlier this year at a particularly compelling point in the story was more disruptive.

I really don’t care too much for the Nielson ratings for obvious reasons. However, imo, this was one of the best episodes of the season yet. I really like Lincoln and his alternate version. I was really surprised that Alt-Lincoln was killed off the show. It was an emotional episode for me because I could relate to Lincoln.

Here’s my feeling on it…the last two episodes were terrible. I held on and held on through this season to get my answers…got some…Olivia and Peter were back (yea!). Anyone who held on told their friends (yea!). Then the high rated episode was not relevant, even took Dunham out of her element (of all the silly things to do?!). So viewers dropped off. My prediction…next week’s viewership will be even worse after an episode that felt to me like spinning wheels…just my opinion.

Hi Rick, I get that element won’t I don’t get is the fact the total audience is the same virtually but 200,000 approx18-49s were replaced by people outside of the key demo, I’m from the UK and there is a huge error with what that is saying, there is mossy that calculation is accurate.

If Wyman is feeling good about a 13 ep season 5 then so am I. The only downside to this is that we probably won’t see the final season until Jan/Feb 2013. Lost did something similar with seasons 4-6.

That being said, I’m going to enjoy the hell out of the next 5 eps. They all look to be centered on the mythology:)

I’m not gonna trip on the ratings because, as it’s been said so many times, this ratings system is completely obsolete now. So I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy my favorite thing in the world. The writers have already said they a proper ending whenever the time comes, so I’m just here for the ride.

You know what? I’m going to stop tearing my hair out every week when these ratings come out. They are what they are, FOX knows this, and it’s not spontaneously renewed or cancelled every week if the ratings go up or down a couple tenths of a point. I’m going to just enjoy the show.
