The drop might not be all that surprising, given that ratings have been falling throughout the week with the start of Daylight Savings Time (longer daylight generally means less folks watching TV). The college basketball on CBS may also have taken a bite out of the Fringe ratings. Not excuses as such, just additional context from which to draw your conclusions.

I’ve been feeling so cheerful all day because I loved stowaway, but now….aghh!!! demo ratings down? seriously!! Damn those Nielsen ratings. If they cancel Fringe, I don’t know what I’ll do. It’s 85% of what I’m thinking about at all times. Hopefully it’ll go up with the final ratings. .

That’s exactly what I thought- I was so happy after Stowaway and Anna’s fabulous impersonation of Bell that I absolutely didn’t see that coming. Let’s just stay hopeful and keep all fingers crossed…I just hate not knowing anything and not being able to do a damn thing about it (can’t even contribute to ratings as I don’t live in the US…)

Ratings from overseas fans count since their local television network pay licence fee to Fringe’s production house which can then charge lower license fee to Fox. Helping with the renewal since everything including ratings are really about money.

Seriously worried now. Maybe I’ll swear off of FOX, that means we only have 5 episodes left and if thy do cancel maybe it’s too late to wrap up the , I feel sick. I would take a 4th season with 13 episodes though to give it a true conclusion butbi hope for 22 and a true 4th season.

Didn’t Pinkner and Wyman say in an interview that Fox’s expectations for Friday were between a 1.2 and a 1.4? If that’s truly the case, and we attribute this slip to DST and basketball, I’m still optimistic about renewal. Besides, we’ve exceeded those expectations almost every week so far.

Does this feel like FOX is throwing away 17 and 18 because
      1. they have problems with the storylines? Bell and overthere?
      2. they have already given up?

I do feel sorry for the cast and crew, especially Anna Torv.

This fu**ing needs to change, or else if god forbid Fringe gets cancelled, I swear I’m done with TV

So American people PLEASE watch it LIVE!!! Even if you don’t have the time, how hard can it be to just turn on the TV on FOX? All of us outside US cannot do anything about that. All we can do is buy the DVD, download the episodes ( which I assume is still illegal ) and be vocal on the internet – from which I gather Fringe has a big and awsome fanbase

@Observer1: I was very optimistic about Season 4 too, until last and now this week – and it’s one horrible feeling

To be honest I’m not surprised by the rating since, though I though the episode was enjoyable because it’s FRINGE, I also couldn’t help but wonder WHY IF THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IS AT STAKE AND WILLIAM BELL, THE ONLY MAN WHO HAS ANY IDEA HOW TO STOP WHAT’S HAPPENING, IS BACK ON OUR SIDE, WHY THE HELL ARE THEY NOT SITTING DOWN GOING, ‘HERE’S WHAT I KNOW, HERE’S WHAT YOU KNOW, LET’S FILL EACH OTHER IN ON THE THINGS THAT COULD HELP STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE OR EVEN TWO OF THEM’? INSTEAD (FOR REASONS I CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE-TAKE NOTE STORYTELLERS) THEY ARE LOOKING INTO CASES THAT, IF THE UNIVERSE ENDS, WONT MATTER WORTH SQUAT TO ANYONE ANYWAY AND WASTING EVERYONE’S TIME!

THIS WHOLE EPISODE IS FILLER! JUST GET TO BELL INTRODUCING SAM AND EVERYONE WORKING TOGETHER FULLY INFORMED BY ONE ANOTHER AT MASSIVE DYNAMIC TO SAVE THE UNIVERSES ALREADY! unless there really is ‘another way’ and none of what we know so far matters, but I highly doubt that. I mean, how could trying to do something or telling Peter about the machine not be important enough? that Bell just goes along to solve some in-the-long-run meaningless case, says some cryptic crap that doesn’t help anyone at all, and then there’s a joint and a cow and the episode is over…sweet… no one learned anything…again…

i just found this about last nights rating; its good, maybe?

["Fringe" Ratings Note: Yes, those numbers are low, but the difference between a low "Fringe" week and a high "Fringe" week is a statistical blip. This dip could just as easily be related to last week's time change as anything else.]

im trying to be optermistic. i have been thinking, i actually love the character of Fauxlivia, not what she did or how she lied or anything like that but her actual character and how she is in her own world, i think is great. i love being able to see the comparisson and also the small parts where they are the same. I will and do watch all episodes and find over there really interesting. Also i like the idea of having bell back like this, only because 1. we might get some more answers that only bell can give, 2. we get to see defensive Peter from the first season, and i liked that and 3. Anna Torvs acting is amazing. she was good when i met her as a kid, and the nicest person i ever met, but she she is unbelievable! Go Aussies! :D

ok thats my rant, but i really am hoping for at least another FULL season, not 13 episodes but 22/23! :D

haha yea i did something down in Australia on a TV show she was on at the time and i was only about 9 years old and the only kid around and so she started talking to me and stayed with me the whole day. She was so beautiful, this was about 10-12 years ago now but as soon as i saw her name on the commercials for fringe i was watching it from day one.

yea it sounds as thought she hasn’t changed much :)

if you are going to say that one particular episode was terrible i don’t think its very far to say ‘anna-centric’ she did her job amazingly and like i said if you are going to say the ep was bad, maybe ‘olivia-centric’ would sound better, Anna did her job and did it well…just a thought

this was not an “Anna-heavy” episode. She wasn’t in it that much, and a lot of us thought it was a pretty good episode, and we have faith in the writers.

Aside from the fact your comment sounds pretty snide, and I’d argue it’s inaccurate looking at the ratings up there, I don’t think your description of this episode as “Anna-centric” makes much sense anyway. Bellivia was a shocking twist and part of the “hook” for the episode’s connection back to the mytharc – it was the “myth” in the “mythalone”, but it was very much the B-plot to Peter and Lincoln investigating the case of the week. Anna Torv was in far fewer scenes than usual which suggests that a secret hatred of her amongst viewers was not the reason for the lower ratings.

Far more likely is a combination of statistical blip, sports even and daylight savings causing lower ratings all week. I’m not trying to present that as an “excuse” because it may still harm chances of renewal – I just think it’s a theory about the ratings that’s got far more empirical evidence backing it up than an actress’ level of participation.

      • says

Pardon me for being “snide”, but this episode was truly terrible. She is a boring actress, and most scenes she’s in make me want to groan and roll my eyes. And this is new – she was highly bearable the previous two seasons.

        Like: Thumb up 0

        • becca says

In your opinion she’s boring – I still find her highly watchable. The point isn’t either of our valid personal opinions, it’s that you chose to assert it was the objective reason for the lower ratings when past precedent doesn’t support it. Past episodes that focused heavily on characters played by Torv haven’t suffered disproportionately poor ratings. This episode featured her in the b-plot and the last episode (in case the lower ratings are a knock-on effect from audiences disliking the last episode to air) didn’t feature her strongly either.

You threw out the allegation with no evidence or discussion of the self-evident counterarguments, so, yeah, it starts to look like you’re trying to use the ratings as a vehicle to attack the actress. Which is probably why so many people replied to you. Not the fact that you don’t enjoy her performances but the aggressive tone and the sweeping statement. If that’s not how you intended it to come across, then fair enough – but next time you may wish to take some time to lay out your reasons for believing this – it’ll help your comment seem less like an angry attack.

Hummm , Well , I have another thought .. it’s because there isn’t Olivia the FBI agent in the ep , and there wasn’t a continue story line what makes this ep drop , the ep was fun to watch but i for one was hoping to see what Belivia will reveal and not to work on the case , and why Peter was 10/10 to go to Massive Dynamic so quickly so he can bring the file + THE DECODER KEY with out any one noticing him . and to Add to all of that …. the no sense that Peter is one who’s talking with Gray while LEE is the agent who’s caring about her case and well informed about her .

Did Anna Torv well acted William Bell ? YES SHE DID , despite what ever the hiding hating for some fans or for what ever vagenda they had , Anna Torv has nothing to do with the story or how the writers would like to draw the lines of the show .

The logic problem there is that you don’t know the episode is “Anna-heavy” or not until after you see it. In fact episode ratings are unrelated to episode quality, exactly because people who tune out have no idea what the quality was.

When The Sarah Connor Chronicles were in serious trouble, the writers produced not only their best episodes, but set a high standard for other SyFy at the time. I went from who cares? to honestly sad to see it go. They began focusing on the characters a lot more and delivered stories with heart and poignancy.

Not that the latest Fringe haven’t been decent, but they are no longer raising the bar or even matching previous marks. The most recent seem a little precious, hammering on some personal meaning, maybe not everyone shares, veering off sometimes in outrageous scientific directions that don’t serve the story arc, and patting themselves for a bevy of in jokes that can get in the way of new viewers. I told everyone, “You gotta check out this show. It’s the best SyFy writing I’ve seen on TV since the original Outer Limits. I still feel that way, but maybe without quite participating in a great adventure and experiencing the awe and mystery of once before. Some seem to be taking the situation for granted.

I think that previous rush can be recaptured, but as with the comments here, there’s a sense of time running out. Likely there are only one or two episodes that are not already locked in stone. I hope the writers, cast, and support crew make the most of what’s left. It’s going to be that close.

Those numbers are not good… I hope this is just a slip.

Anyways, we cannot rely on optimism, thinking that there will be more seasons just because the producers said they’ve got plans. All shows have got plans for several seasons (remember FlashForward?), but they rely on ratings to keep the story going on.

Viewers in the U.S need to get those numbers up for the remaining of this season, so Fringe gets a 4th season. This is important because with a full 4th season, the show gets into syndication; otherwise it will vanish into thin air.

Looks like there’s time for campaigns. Not to “save” but to HELP Fringe; if the Nielsen boxes are the only way to calculate the ratings, well, then send letters and emails to FOX telling them something like, “I watch Fringe live too, count me in!”. FLOOD Fox with letters and emails. For more details, feel free to click on my name to go to my blog and find out more, including a Twitter account and a Facebook page. Thanks.
