Midnight - rewatch

Synopsis: The Fringe Division is on the case when severely mutilated bodies drained of spinal cord fluid begin to pile up. After their investigation leads them to a scientist (guest star Jefferson Mays) with possible ties to the Z.F.T. bioterrorist cell, they are shocked to discover the identity and motive of the killer. When the kills occur with increasing frequency, Olivia, Peter and Walter go to desperate lengths to stop them.

Below the jump I share my new observations and perspectives, and take a quick look at the unresolved and closed mysteries from “Midnight”.

A bit later than normal, but here’s the FringeBloggers clues and eastereggs round-up for 1.18 “Midnight”.

Where’s The Fire?

1.18 Midnight - Clues & Eastereggs

The news ticker reports that a “mysterious fire” has broken out downtown. The next episode “Road Not Taken” focuses heavily on spontaneous human combustion:

Hot Chick

This is surely the “Midnight” clue for the next episode.

Midnight - Fringie of the WeekCongratulations to Olivia Dunham (and Anna Torv) for winning the 1.18 “Midnight” Fringie of the Week with 31% of the total vote. In what was an epic 3-way tussle between Walter and Peter, the intrepid agent came through with a flurry of votes on the final day.

This victory keeps alive Olivia’s hopes of winning the best character of season 1 award. With only two more FOTW’s to take place this season, the overall table looks like this:

  1. Peter Bishop / Walter Bishop / Olivia Dunham (6 wins each)
  2. The Observer/Meegar’s Mom/ The Child (1 win each)

It’s all square at the top between the big three. Anyone of them can win it now! FOTW 1.19 “The Road Not Taken” will be posted in the next day or so.

Two singles together. When I think about it, it’s a pretty apt description of the theme running through episode 1.18 “Midnight”.

The best moments from the episode featured two of these ‘singles’ together in the Lab – Walter Bishop, a man of science separated from his memories, and Nicholas Boone, a fellow scientist who no-longer recognises the spinal-juice sucking vampiress that used to be his wife. Quite a fall for both men. As is often the case, there’s a kind of symmetry in that both men have been punished for their scientific explorations. Whilst Boone was punished for being a ZFT dissenter, Walter also received punishment for the death of his former lab assistant. One also wonders whether Walter’s punishment was ‘engineered’. As I touched at the end of the previous episode, I think there’s more to Walter’s St. Claire’s incarceration than meets the eye. I suspect that he either intentionally sacrificed 17 years of his life, or someone punished him for not being fully committed to the cause. But that’s speculation for another day.

FringeBloggers & Friends Weekly Roundtable!

Each week FringeBloggers invite some of the most interesting personalities from the Fringe community into FB Towers, to review aspects from the most recent episode in our Fringe Roundtable! Joining the panel this week to review Midnight are Joe Bua from IAmATVJunkie.com, KeeTee and yvaine!

What did you think of the opening for this episode?

Joe Bua: I have to say they threw me this week. I was pretty sure after Olivia’s childhood friend’s story last week this week was either setting up a copycat or some other malicious male. He may or may not be malicious (or just a cad) but I was thinking either Craigslist killer or Cortexiphanian. And I was wrong on both counts. Biologically engineered syphlitic vampire 1, Joe 0.

KeeTee: I loved it. The music really added to the creepy vibe.

yvaine: It sure was an exciting opening, which, personally, was reminiscent of Bad Dreams for me.  It was a good buildup to the final scene before the title card.  What can I say, it’s my kind of opening scene.  :p

"Midnight" - Science Fiction vs Science Fact

Popular Mechanics are back to put the latest episode of Fringe -“Midnight” – under their scientific spotlight:

Peter Bishop might only be able to handle one mad scientist, but in Fringe episode 18, “Midnight,” we got two—Dr. Nicholas Boone, who had been creating bioweapons for the mysterious terrorist organization ZFT, joined Walter Bishop in his Harvard lab. Thanks to Boone, we know how ZFT reacts when your conscience catches up with you: They kidnap your wife, infect her with a virus and turn her into a spinal fluid–drinking monster.

When dead bodies begin turning up in the Boston area with their spinal cords ripped out of their backs and their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) completely drained, Agent Olivia Dunham and father–son duo Walter and Peter Bishop are on the case. Their investigation leads them to scientist Nicholas Boone, who informs them that after he tried to defect from ZFT, they stole his wife and infected her with an extinct strain of syphilis that turned her into a creature thirsty for CSF. The virus upped her body temperature to 105 degrees, he claims, and she’s burning through her own CSF faster than she can replenish it. “When she kills, she’s refueling,” Boone says. And before she took off, Boone tells us, he was feeding his wife with his own spinal fluid. But the more he gave, the more she craved—and that’s how he ended up in a wheelchair.
