Fringe Rewatch - Inner Child

Synopsis: Just seconds before a building is demolished, a mysterious mute child that has been living alone underground is discovered. When the FBI’s Fringe Division investigates, the boy forms an unspoken connection with Agent Olivia Dunham. Meanwhile, an especially gruesome serial killer resurfaces and showcases his “artistry” by displaying his work publicly. As the boy gradually assimilates into a new environment, Olivia and the team must race against the clock to prevent the mad man from further macabre.

Below the jump I share my new observations and perspectives, and take a quick look at the unresolved and closed mysteries from “Inner Child”.

1.15 Inner Child - Fringie of the Week!

Congratulations to “The Child” (and Spencer List) for winning 1.15 “Inner Child” Fringie of the Week! The newcomer to Fringe certainly made a positive impact on voters because in almost any other week this one would have been Olivia’s for the taking. It was a three-horse race early on between the Child, Olivia and Walter, but in the end the Lil’ Observer kid won through with an emphatic (or is that empathic?) 39% of the total vote.

Here’s the overall leader board going into the last 5 episodes:

  1. Peter Bishop (6 wins)
  2. Walter Bishop (5 wins)
  3. Olivia Dunham (4 wins)
  4. The Observer/Meegar’s Mom/ The Child (1 win each)

Unless the Observer wins all 5 of the remaining episodes, it’s a three-horse race between Peter, Walter and Olivia. Stay tuned for the 1.16 Fringie of the Week!

Here are the FringeBloggers clues and eastereggs round-up for episode 1.15 – “Inner Child”.

Peek-A-Boo, Eye See You
Inner Child - Clues & Eastereggs

When the Child is first discovered by the demolition guys, his eyes are a shade of bright blue. Later in the episode, once he has started to adapt to his new surroundings, his eyes settle on a deep brown color. The adaptability of the Observers could offer some insight into how they are able to exist in our reality.

Inner Child – Meta For The Metaphor

by Roco on April 11, 2009 · 2 comments

Olivia approaches the Child

They peer at one another from across the room — Olivia through the blinds, the Child, rather timidly, from behind the door. Olivia approaches him slowly, her kind, inquisitive gaze never leaving his. She sits down in front of him, and asks: “are you trying to help me?” He doesn’t reply. He’s angry that she’s allowing him to be sent away.

No-one should let go of their inner child.

This one scene provides so much of the meaning behind the episode. The Child is not just a being from another reality, he also symbolises Olivia’s intuition, her deep sense of knowing — her “inner child”.

The Multiverse is like a bad of sweets

Forrest Gump once said; “life [is] like a box of chocolates”. Well, if that’s the case, reality must be like a bag of sweets — there’s just so many to choose from!

There was one scene in “Inner Child” that had me intrigued above all others. It was the moment when Olivia poured out a handful of M&M’s — the many different colors serving as a possible metaphor for the Multiverse — where all things are possible and were all realities are probable. For example, you’re ALWAYS going to get at least one yellow M&M in every bag. Likewise, there’s bound to be other realities similar to our own (where Roadblock’s scar is on the other side, for instance), just as there are even more realities that are vastly different, and others that no longer exist because they have expired (like a bag of 5 year old M&M’s).

I’m not the only one who noticed the possible Cortexiphan clue when Olivia said that she never liked the yellow M&M’s when she was a kid because they reminded her of medicine. Like many of you, my guess is that Cortexiphan (or a related medicine) is yellow - the color of happiness, but also of deceit and anger. To my mind, this mirrors the role that Cortexiphan may play in Olivia’s life — on the one hand it has seemingly given her access to amazing gifts (by keeping her minds-eye open), but on the other hand she was Cortexiphaned without any say in the matter — she had no choice. Don’t think that wont matter — Olivia is a “question machine”, it will dig away at her like a splinter in her mind.

Inner Child - Peter Theory

Long-term readers of the blog or the forums will know that I’ve advocated the multiple reality/dimension theories since very early in the shows run. The “Ability” episode all but confirmed that multiple realities and inter-dimensional travel are some of the key elements of “Fringe”. Now it would seem that “Inner Child” further supports this claim. Not just with the discovery of a Lil’ Observer, but through some of the other hints that were seeded throughout the episode. In particular the focus falls on Peter Bishop.

It has been claimed by many that Peter is a clone of Walter. Personally, I’ve never supported this theory (certainly not after the first couple of episodes) — it seems to obvious..too easy. Instead of Peter being a clone of Walter, I posit that Peter is in fact a counterpart of Peter.
