One thing that strikes me about the Observer is that he doesn’t seem to be very aware of himself. Whether it’s his lack of dignity in the diner, being captured on film at hundreds of Pattern-events, or being jumped from behind by Peter in the woods - he either lacks self-awareness of he doesn’t care that he is also being observed by those chasing the Pattern.

If it’s the former and he lacks self-awareness, then we can add this to the list of things that he lacks - hair, taste-buds, the ability to emote. It’s almost as if his senses are dulled so that he can perform his task of observing without any distractions whatsoever. Which in turn reminds me of a machine - one built to perform a specific job, nothing more, nothing less. Not that I’m suggesting that he’s a machine. Rather that he comes from a place, or time, which is bereft of the human condition as we know it. It’s almost as if he’s a representation of a past representation - he eats hot food to understand what it must be like to taste, he wears 1920’s clothing to understand what it must be like to feel prosperous and hopeful (although that in itself would indicate some self-awareness at least?).

OK, maybe I’m taking a few liberties with the date of his clothing, but there must be a reason for his choice of dress sense. Then again, maybe the Observer’s lack of self-awareness stems from the fact that he’s got an awesome stun-gun and no-one can get in his way?

I guess the true nature of the Observer will be one of those over-arching mysteries.
