Counter Theory: Blue Flashes Before Your Eyes

If you’ve been following this blog or the Fringe clues closely, then you’ll know that most of the episodes so far have featured a bright blue light that flashes at various intervals. Since it’s appearance in the Pilot episode I’ve wondered what these blue flashes could mean. Doc Arzt over at the Seeing Patterns blog has offered his opinion as to what this strange phenomena could signify:

it’s styling.  Simple cinematic styling to help define the look of the show.   Color scheming is a common practice in film production, and Fringe is a member of that world so I’m going to have to say that the copious amounts of blue are simply there to help the look of the show.

It’s an interesting perspective, there’s no doubt that the blue flashes could simply be a way of adding style and identity to the show. However, I can’t help feel that there’s more to it than just styling. Especially when the very first appearance of the blue flashes comes in the opening title credits, as the words “Observers Are Here” appears (see above image). That’s why I speculate that the flashes could be linked to our Observer friend and his people - perhaps they represent observation from afar? Specifically the opening and closing of a distant portal or dimension? A part of me would even buy the idea that the flashes are the glare from a distant telescope! Perhaps this could also tie-in with the idea that the Observer is from another place…or time?

  1. One of my co-hosts speculated a few podcasts ago that the “blue scenes” were those that were being observed by someone. I then watched the next episode (which was The Ghost Network) with the idea that any blue scenes were my glimpse into the observer’s point of view and found it to be a cool way of watching. I don’t know if it will turn out to be true or not, but I think it’s a cool theory.

  2. I like it! Perhaps eventually we’ll be able to go back and piece together all the scenes with the blue flashes in them, to see if they make sense somehow? It’s definetely worth watching those scenes with The Observers point of view in mind, even the ones that he himself is in (as he walks out of the diner/observing the capsule). Nice thinking.
