Countdown to Fringe: Kirk Acevedo is Charlie Francis

Kirk Acevedo portrays FBI Agent Charlie Francis.

Most famous for?:He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Miguel Alverez in the HBO series OZ.

Alvarez’s father and grandfather are both serving life sentences in Oz, and Alvarez has been incarcerated for assaulting an old man who accidentally scratched his car. His girlfriend is convicted of the same crime and serving in the Parker Women’s facility. Growing up in a hard and poor Latino neighborhood, Alvarez does whatever is necessary to survive. He is often isolated and has had conflicts with several others, especially Carmen Guerra and Warden Leo Glynn. Still, he still appears salvagable to both Unit Manager Tim McManus and Father Ray Mukada.

Bio: Born and raised in Bronx and spent most of his formative years hanging out in New York City, Kirk Acevedo, who is of Puerto Rican/Chinese descent, received his BFA from SUNY Purchase and founded a theater company called The Rorschach Group. After guest-starring on several television shows like “New York Undercover” (1994) and “Law & Order” (1990), he landed his best-known role as Alvarez, a morose and violent prisoner struggling for redemption on HBO’s notoriously gritty “Oz” (1997). Though he was nominated for a Cable Ace award and an ALMA award for his work on “Oz” (1997), it was Acevedo’s role as Pvt. Tella in The Thin Red Line (1998) that won him an ALMA.

Hype: We’re all looking forward to seeing more of him in Fringe. He has an on-screen presence, and it will be interesting to see whether his character turns out being a good guy, or a bad guy.

Smexyness: He’s pretty cute 8.5/10 (although a certain Fringe Blogger would have him at 10/10).
