Hot on the heels of the awesome season 2 promo posters, FOX have released a whole truckload of brand new season 2 FRINGE cast photos!
In typical Fringe style they contain several clues and quirks – hit the jump to view all of the photos and eastereggs:

Observations
- Two sets of photos – set one an interior theme and set 2 in exterior style-y
- Set one features each of the main characters standing in front of an open door – no doubt this symbolises the ‘doorway’ to alternate worlds featured in the show.
- On each of the set one photos a shadow can be seen on the door – in my opinion this is PETER’S shadow – or perhaps it’s meant to hint towards original Peter (is he still alive?). But in truth it could merely be a symbolic reference to the general theme of alternate copies of people in other worlds.
- Curiously the set one Peter photo has the shadow reaching for the door handle – this isn’t the case with any of the other photos (apart from Broyles’..kinda), so perhaps there’s some merit to the speculation above?
- Spoiler warning **** Despite the early rumours, Kirk Acevedo appears in both sets of photos (looking slightly photoshopped, in my opinion), including the group photo. To be fair, Jeff Pinkner has maintained that such talk was premature.
- Set 2 has an alternate reality feel to it with the characters standing on water in front of a blue backdrop – note the ripples in the water, perhaps symbolising the ’cause and effect’ between our world and others.
- Nina is the only character who is standing on ‘hard ground’ instead of water in the set 2 photos – what could this symbolise? (is she unable to cross over? Is she the only version of her kind?)
- Walter is wearing a similar cardigan to the one the alter-Walter (or what-have-you) wore in “The Equation”.
- All of the characters are wearing the mythical “blacks and grays”..except for Walter.
We’ll update with more observations as we find them.
Thanks to SpoilerTV for the headsup on the photos.

Love, love, LOVE all the new photos! I love that Charlie is in the pictures — that’s a good sign! I love that they’re all in relatively toned down, neutral colors, and then there’s Walter in brown pants, a red sweater, and a plaid shirt. I don’t know why, but I laughed when I saw that. I love that there are very obvious reflections in the “water” they’re standing on.
Some additional observations:
In the group picture, are they standing in the Massive Dynamic room, where Olivia met Nina in the pilot? It looks like the same kind of structure of the room and such. That would be interesting.
In the indoor pictures it looks like there’s something on the wall to the left of the person — almost like the number 3. But maybe it’s just odd textures on the wall.
Also, in the indoor picture of Peter, that same portion of the wall off to the left of him is darker than in the other pictures.
Also, Nina and Broyles are right next to each other in the group picture. It could be just random positioning, or it could be indicating the way they are working together or that they have/had a relationship at one point. (it’s okay to speculate about that here, right?)
I also noticed that Peter has taken up a central position in the group shots. If I remember correctly, in season 1, Olivia was in the center position in all pictures that included the three of them. But in the picture of the three of them for this season, Peter is right in the middle. Same for the whole group picture. In season 1, they were all kind of spread out and the middle person sort of varied, but in this one, they’re all very close together, with Peter very boldly in the very center. Could that indicate a shift in focus to be more on Peter this season?
That is one crazy interior – I’m with you on it being inside the MD building (the Vancouver branch
).
Good eyes! There DOES appear to be something on the wall – I can’t quite make it out though. Time for some image manip!
It does look like we’ll be getting more Peter focus this year. Here are the two of the group photos from last season:

Strange to think that Nina was at the center of the bottom one.
Then, there’s that power box next to the door. Does anyone else here think that it doesn’t belong there? When’s the last time you saw a box of that type on the INSIDE of a house?
…then there’s the group shot. It seems that Broyles and Nina are posed such that they’re facing toward one other–almost like they’re in their own little separate group. And those angles in the group picture, wow, nuts. Very “Twilight Zone”-ish.
Broyles and Nina do appear to be in their own little group within a group don’t they.
There’s also the light radiating through Astrid – probably nothing, but I thought i’d mention it.
Then there’s the partial red/black sequence with the shoes.
Going back to the ripples..Walter and Charlie appear to be making the most, whereas Olivia’s are very faint – if that’s intentional (and it’s gotta be, right?), I’d have thought Olivia’s ripples would be seismic!
I would think. But in picture 5, ‘Liv’s ripples are the more pronounced. But yeah, I agree, wherever Olivia goes the ripples should be more like a tidal wave than ripples anyway.
Ah, good point.
Perhaps this alludes to Olivia’s ability being stronger when with Peter and/or Walter?
Of course, this depends partly on how much influence the powers that be had on this photoshoot – although I guess the director (of the shoot) could be playing with ‘general’ themes.
“Then, there’s that power box next to the door. Does anyone else here think that it doesn’t belong there? When’s the last time you saw a box of that type on the INSIDE of a house?”
Good point. Reminds me of the strong ‘electricity theme’ in season 1..
Didn’t Nina make a point of saying that she communicated with Bellie electronically across the alterverse.
Which I always thought was very interesting. I mean, there’s a short wave set that can communicate between realities? Far out, man. Does Haggerty Radio supply stock those? I’m getting one…
I’d love one too – just in case.
Speaking of which, I wonder if Bellie repaired Nina’s hand electronically last season, after it glicthed.. (I guess we could also put that down to the energy cell).
Another quick observation…on the interior pictures, each character has two distinct shadows on the floor running in opposite directions. The shadows from the subject to the lower, left hand corner of the picture doesn’t seem right as there’s no light source behind the subject to create the shadow…?
Nice!
I noticed a similar effect in last season’s group photo – the shadows are all over the joint:
http://www.fringebloggers.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/bfringepromo10.jpg
I think that this new 2009 set is even more intentional though.
I’d also wondered about the significance of the power box. For the most part, the scene if very bare — no decorations or additions, except for that random box. It does seem as though it should have some meaning or purpose, huh?
The more I look at the group picture, the more I like it. Like FlashWriter said, I love the angles in it — the angles in the structure of the room itself, as well as the angles made in the characters, the way they’re facing, the overall “v” shape they’re in — very well done and nice to look at.
Regarding Charlie and the theory that he’s been photoshopped in, I can see where you’re coming from, but it just doesn’t make sense. Why would they go to all the trouble to photoshop him into all the pictures if he’s not going to be somewhat regular this season? It doesn’t make sense for them to do that just to make fans think he’ll be there when he won’t. Besides that, if they were going to photoshop him in, why would they stick him in between two characters? It seems it would be easier if they’d put him on one of the ends. I imagine that, as the producers say, Charlie will be a somewhat regular presence in the season, though less than in season 1. I’m thinking it will be somewhat like John Scott: he was in all the group pictures, too, even though they “killed him off” in the first episode. And he continued to show up periodically through the season. That’s what I expect for Charlie.
Nice catch on the shadows — that is kind of random. It’s like the main shadow follows the same direction as the shadow on the door, while the other one is going the opposite direction. Interesting effect!
I also was surprised to notice that the ripples around Olivia were so minimal — like you, I had expected them to be more noticeable, like Walter’s. Maybe they have a different meaning than the obvious one of cause and effect. Of course, I have no idea what that would be…
Re: Charlie, I hear ya. I could be wrong, but there could be all sorts of reasons why they might photoshop him into the pictures. (including photographic reasons). He might not be a regular this season – Acevedo’s ‘Facebook outburst’ seemed pretty genuine, so I think there might still be some smoke there. If this is the case they might not have required him to turn up to the shoot. That being said, it’s mainly the group photo that looks iffy to me. Maybe it’s just the crazy angles in the background making him look disproportionate? Regardless, I think he’ll be in the show this season, how much depends on the direction of the show.
I like the idea of the ripples possibly having a different meaning than what we might think. That’s one of the beauties of this show – not everything is as it seems!
Could be the actress playing Jessup was in that place before and they replaced her with Charlie. Hence the photoshopping.
“Then, there’s that power box next to the door. Does anyone else here think that it doesn’t belong there? When’s the last time you saw a box of that type on the INSIDE of a house?”
It goes with the Old Tech theme, I would guess. My folks’ house has electric boxes like that in the basement, domed ones dating from the 50′s. And the paint job on the walls is very film noir, layers and layers of cracquelure.
Some of the perspective weirdness in the group photo is due to the weird room I think; it gives confusing cues. And I think they used a telephoto lens to foreshorten things, make them all appear closer to the picture plane than they are, which would account for them seeming to be such weird heights in relation to each other.
Charlie’s shadow appears to be holding a gun; Peters’,opening the door. And Peter’s got a clenched fist. Maybe Nina has no ripples in her water pic because her arm has hover capabilites?
Gotta love Peter’s levi’s!
“Charlie’s shadow appears to be holding a gun”
Thanks for that, I was trying to work out what it might be and a gun sounds about right.
And—here’s a thought. As these photos converge on Peter, (even the lines in that room all point to him), and last years’ centered on Olivia, maybe the idea was to focus a year on her, one on him, next year Walter….rotating through to let us get to know all of them–that indeed as they said originally it would be the three of them together, not just one of them as “star” with the others lesser beings. As a Peter fan, this year centering on him would be marvellous of course! But also, a year centering on Walter! That could be excellent as well. Plus give the writers lots more latitude for cool things to do.
I really like this idea. Whilst I believe Olivia’s story is at the heart of the show (she knits everything and everyone together), the ensemble is the show. The rotation feature could be a fascinating story-telling mechanism.
It’s a new day with new observations.
First off: It looks like there’s something red behind the door — you can see it just between the crack at the hinge. It’s most noticeable in Nina’s picture, since she’s standing off to the side. I have no idea what it is, or if it’s even significant, but it is odd.
Also, I’d pointed out before that in Peter’s picture there’s that large black spot off to the left that covers the majority of the wall. It almost reminds me of the charred walls in Nancy Pratt’s (I think that’s the right twin) apartment. Anyway, I also noticed that it changed for all of them. For Peter, it’s huge, for Walter, it’s essentially not even there.
While I was looking at that, I also noticed that Charlie’s picture seems noticeably darker than all of the others. I realized that in his picture, the whole area on the other side of the door is darker — as if there’s no light coming from there. For everyone else, however, it’s rather bright and appears like there’s a great deal of light coming from the other side. What do you think that means?
Yikes, that looks like Walter’s cardigan hanging up behind the door..
Of course I’m probably seeing what I want to see! Either way, nice spot, there’s definitely something there – unintentional or otherwise.
Charlie’s does look a bit darker – I’m standing by my earlier belief that he could be photoshopped in, possibly one reason to make the shot darker to conceal the image manip.
But did you notice how the space on the other side of the door is completely dark in Charlie’s picture, while for everyone else it’s light? It’s not just that they made the picture look darker, but the lighting is actually different. I don’t think that would be necessary to cover up photoshopping. They could have still used the same background and lighting for that… I think it’s some type of foreshadowing.
I don’t know what the big deal about Olivia and sure isn’t the heart of the show.
What I said was – Olivia’s story was at the heart of the show, in my opinion. Certainly as an ‘entry point’ into the world of the show, Olivia’s story melded everyone together – she was, after all, the one who brought the Bishop boys back together.
That being said I’m a fan of the ensemble and going forward, I’d love to know more about the Bishop’s and the other characters – not to mention more Olivia.
We’ve seen enough Olivia. The whole last season was devoted to her. its time for people to realize that olivia is not the only character on this show.
Charlie’s holding a gun…hmmmm.
when is fringe2 coming to the uk?
You know, I don’t believe we’ve heard a date yet. I expect Sky will make their decision public soon.
1. I noticed that Charlie’s door picture was darker, too. His face is not completely illuminated, one half is nearly black (reminds me of Two-Face)Also his shadow seems to look different than the others’ (compare the legs). I don’t know what it’s holding but it doesn’t look like a gun to me. Charlie is the only one whose whole body is turned towards the door and his expression is slightly frightened or worried.
–> The dark color might be a sign that eather something bad will happen to him or that he will turn evil (or maybe it’s just the Charlie from the other side who is evil). The turning towards the door might indicate that he will cross over to the other side.
2. Peter is the only one whose body is completely turned away from the door. As you noted his shadow is reaching for the door handle.
–> Maybe something or someone (Walter?) from peters past will come for Peter and to tell him the truth about his past and because Peter doesn’t want to know or to believe it he turns away.
3. Walter kind of looks like the shadow (pants!). Also as you said Walter is an exception regarding the dressing style and colors. Walter like Charlie does not have an additional shadow on the wall under the power box. He looks a little bit evil (like the alter-Walter who I think is quite similar to the Walter from the other side).
–> Somehow I think that the Walter from the other side might come by for a visit.:-)
4. The pictures have differently illuminated backgrounds. Broyeles has the lightest.
This latest cast photo of Charlie has me fearing the worst.
I should have known better than to click on that link whilst sipping my coffee..too funny
I guess the stakes will be raised in season 2 now that Livvy’s crossed over. Danger and trepidation await all of our Fringies! At least, I hope so.
Very good very strong!
