1.03 The Ghost Network Easteregg and Clues Round-up
Here’s our Fringe easteregg and clues round-up for episode 1.03 The Ghost Network.
R.I.P. Ethics
At the funeral of John Scott, the only discernible name on any of the grave stones is that of “Steneck”. Considering the way in which Massive Dynamic are prodding and probing his mind, this could be a shout-out to Dr. Nicholas Steneck, who took an active role in the “ethics of research” in the mid-1980’s. It could be said that Massive Dynamic are acting unethically with their (speculated) reanimation/decryption of John Scott’s mind.
Clone-ly Walter Could Put it so Sweetly
When the team (A) see the attacked bus for the first time, Walter’s response is to say the passengers on-board look like “Mosquitoes trapped in amber” (B). This seems like an allusion to the (possible) cloning in “Fringe”, and a shout-out to Jurassic Park, in which Dinosaurs were cloned from the extracted blood of Mosquitos trapped in amber (C). We’ve already had cloning hinted at in Fringe during episode 2 - ’Same Old Story’, when we were given a glimpse of the three Christopher Penrose’s in what appeared to be a Massive Dynamic laboratory.
The Key to Evolution in the palm of Mankind?
Could be something, could be nothing, but it’s perhaps worth noting the early relevance of the Fringe viral images, such as the one on the left, which is a 6 fingered hand. Possibly hinting at evolution. In 1.03 we discover that the DEA agent hid an important disk in the palm of her hand. It’s believed that this disk holds the key to decrypting information stored in the brain. Certainly, Massive Dynamic appear willing to use it for that purpose in regards to the dead John Scott. All of which could be argued to be an evolutionary step at the scientific hands of man-kind.
The Truth Shall Be Sign-posted
In episode 2, there was a brief shot of a sign post with an arrow which read - “VOCES VIDEO”. This is Latin for ‘TO SEE VOICES’. This foreshadowed exactly what was inflicting Roy McComb in this episode - As a result of Walter Bishop’s experimentation (and perhaps continued experimentation by third parties), Roy’s brain was able to pick up waves which were outside of the normal spectrum of waves. Therefore, he became prone to picking up communication on the secret ‘Ghost Network’, which was being used by Matthew Ziegler and pals to covertly discuss the pattern and other such things. So instead of interpreting the ‘voices’ normally, Roy’s brain literally ’saw’ what was being spoken on the Ghost Network - hence his need to draw or depict the planned attacks that were being communicated. Quite literally, Roy was able to ’see voices’. This clue was literally signposted in the previous episode (inset)!
Observing Olivia
As we posted earlier in the week, the creepy bald guy or ‘CBG’ was back in action stalking the lovely Olivia yet again. We got several good (but super-quick) shots of him in this episode, one in a reflection (A) and the other moments later as Olivia walked past him - his beady eyes watching her (B). *He was also seen leaving the train station. For recap purposes, we’ve also compiled the other CBG stalking captures from the previous two episodes (C), the hidden words “OBSERVERS ARE HERE” from the Fringe title credits (D), as well as the word “OBSEVERED”that was hidden in Olivia’s hair in the viral poster (E). Olivia is being closely watched..but why?
No Smoke Without Fire
Near the end of the episode Broyles hands Olivia some case files of other pattern events, some of which Broyles hadn’t been aware of prior to Roy’s “VOCES VIDEO”. One of the cases had a picture of a man sitting in a limousine, seemingly solidified by the smoke which has engulfed the cabin of the car (A). This seems like a variant of the bus attack that happened in this episode, and perhaps the viral poster of the ’smoke face man’ (B) gave us some forshadowing?

I think the “Smoke” in the limo might just be what the amber looks like in a black and white photo considering the picture was shown to Olivia described as another incident just like the one she investigated earlier that day.
Just my opinion.
That’s a good shout - you could be right on that.
